Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e, Romanlarda Batılılaşma ve Kadın

Abstract

Bu tez, 'kadınlık durumunun' Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet batılılaşması/modernleşmesi sürecinde romanlarda nasıl temsil edildiğini incelemektedir. Çalışmada, hemen her açıdan bir geçiş dönemi olan ve modernleşmenin başladığı 19. yüzyılın yanı sıra, batılılaşmanın hız kazandığı ve yoğunlaştığı 20. yüzyıl da ele alınmıştır. Gerçeğe son derece yakın bir tarih anlatıcılığı yaptığı düşünülen dönem romanlarının metin incelemeleri yapılmıştır. İncelemeye esas olarak 'muhafazakâr', 'modernleşmeci' ve 'sentez arayışında' olarak kategorize edilen yazarların romanları konu edilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra, söz konusu romanlar üzerine yapılmış çalışmalar da ikincil kaynaklar olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışma, Doğu – Batı karşıtlığının toplumsal düzlemde yarattığı buhran ve çatışmanın, kadınlığın temsilini de önemli ölçüde etkilediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bir yandan modern toplumda kadının rolünün değişmesi gerektiğine vurgu yapılırken, diğer yandan geleneksel cinsiyet rollerinden de tam olarak sıyrılmasına izin verilmediği gösterilmektedir.

This study examines how 'women' has been represented in the novels in the process of westernization /modernization both during the Ottoman era and the Republican era. It focuses on both the 19th century, which experienced the start of westernization, and the 20th century, which witnessed the radicalization of the modernization process. By employing the content analysis method, the related novels of these periods are examined. Mainly, the novels of those writers, who are categorized 'modernizers', conservatives', and 'synthesizers' are analyzed. Moreover, the studies that focus on the same novels are also used as secondary sources. It is argued in the study that the crisis situation and the grievances that the East – West antinomy created at the societal level highly influenced the representations of the women in the novels. While many writers have emphasized in the novels that women should have a new role in the modern society, they also continue to attribute traditional gender roles to women.
