Abstract

This study considers the concept of «Sociolinguistic Translators' Competence» in the context of professionally-oriented teaching of foreign languages to translation/interpretation students. The translators'/interpreters' awareness of multi-faceted differences in cultures, leads to higher quality professional activity. Cultural features are reflected in languages, the same way as languages are reflected in cultural features. Thus, it is an essential element in teaching foreign languages, as the development of the Sociolinguistic Competence contributes to a deeper understanding of target cultures, and as the result, facilitates more efficient and successful communication. The second chapter of the study looks into the notion of «Sociolinguistic Translators' Competence», its content, structure, components, and specific character. It also provides the theoretical background to the notion and analyzes the principles that should be taken into consideration when working on the formation and development of the Sociolinguistic Translators' Competence. The third chapter is devoted to the examination of the figure of translation/interpretation students, consideration of a typical BA curricular of a target speciality in different countries, and detailed analysis of possible forms of works and activities that could be used to develop Sociolinguistic Translators' Competence. This work suggests a practical methodology for developing the competence and curriculum activities that could be implemented into the process of the professional education of translation/interpretation students.
