Abstract

The Second World War has had a great and bitter impact upon the countries which participated in it. Unfortunately, one of those countries suffered tragic consequences of the war since it was invaded twice firstly by Italy, and then by Germany. Out of the military invasion, Greece also suffered from the starvation which lasted approximately 5 years in the country. This long and terrific period is known as “μεγάλος λιμός” or the Great Famine. The only country helping Greece during the period of invasion and famine was Turkey, and a distinguished Turkish man named Feridun Demokan brought the Greek tragedy into the public attention and informed the entire world about this disaster. This article will focus on the period of Greek famine and the activities of Feridun Demokan who worked as the representative of the Turkish Red Crescent Society.
