Article Citation - WoS: 61Citation - Scopus: 72A Blue To Highly Transmissive Soluble Electrochromic Polymer Based on Poly(3,4-Propylenedioxyselenophene) With a High Stability and Coloration Efficiency(Royal Soc Chemistry, 2011) Ozkut, Merve Icli; Atak, Samed; Onal, Ahmet M.; Cihaner, AtillaThe optical and electrochemical properties of a regioregular and soluble alkylenedioxyselenophene-based electrochromic polymer, namely poly(3,3-didecyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-selenopheno[3,4-b][1,4] dioxepine (PProDOS-C-10), which is synthesized by electrochemical polymerization, are highlighted. It is noted that this unique polymer has a low band gap (1.58 eV) and is exceptionally stable under ambient atmospheric conditions. Polymer films retain 97% of their electroactivity after 40 000 cycles. The percentage transmittance of a PProDOS-C10 film was found to be 56.4% at 638 nm and 55.8% at 700 nm. Furthermore, this novel soluble PProDOS-C10 polymer shows an electrochromic behavior: a color change from pure blue to a highly transparent state in a low switching time (1.0 s) during oxidation, with high coloration efficiencies (328 cm 2 C-1 at 638 nm and 319 cm(2) C-1 at 700 nm) when compared to its thiophene analogue.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 13A Low Band Gap Polymer Based on Selenophene and Benzobis (thiadiazole)(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2017) Abdulrazzaq, Mohammed; Ozkut, Merve Icli; Gokce, Gurcan; Ertan, Salih; Tutuncu, Esra; Cihaner, AtillaA new derivative of benzobis(thiadiazole) based donor-acceptor-donor type monomers, namely 4,7-di (selenophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-c;4,5-c']bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (SeBTSe), was synthesized and its polymerization was carried out successfully via electrochemical polymerization in an electrolyte solution of 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in dichloromethane. The monomer SeBTSe is a deep red chromophore and it has four redox states: one oxidation, one neutral and two reduction states. The electrochemical behaviour of the corresponding polymer called PSeBTSe was studied by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. There is a good agreement between electrochemical (0.62-0.66 eV) and optical (0.63 eV) bandgaps of the polymer. Like the monomer, the ambipolar polymer has four redox states and electrochromic properties: gray beige at neutral state, smoky azurite at oxidized state, beige at first reduced state and dark beige at second reduced state. The corresponding copolymer has an optical band gap of 1.7 eV and 41% optical contrast at 525 nm with a coloration efficiency of 258 cm(2)/C and 1.4 s switching time. The copolymer has a multi-electrochromic behavior: It has dark purple, purple, gray, green and cyan colors at different oxidation states. Electrochemical stability of P(EDOT-co-1) copolymer was also investigated and it was observed that the copolymer retained 86% of its stability under ambient conditions in the presence of oxygen (without purging the electrolyte solution with any inert gas) according to the current density and 83% according to the deposited charge even after 1000 redox cycles.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Designing a Solution Processable Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxyselenophene) Analogue(Amer Chemical Soc, 2018) Ertan, Salih; Cihaner, AtillaA new derivative (EDOS-POSS) of 3,4-ethylenedioxyselenophene integrated with alkyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cage was synthesized and characterized. The electroactive monomer was successfully polymerized via both chemical and electrochemical methods. The obtained polymer called PEDOS-POSS was solution-processable and soluble in common organic solvents like tetrahydrofuran, toluene, dichloromethane, and chloroform. PEDOS-POSS polymer exhibited electrochromic behavior: pure blue when neutralized and highly transparent when oxidized. When compared to the parent PEDOS (1.40 eV with lambda(max) = 673 nm), PEDOS-POSS polymer film has a somewhat higher band gap (1.50 eV with lambda(max) = 668 and 724 nm). Also, PEDOS POSS exhibited high optical contrast ratio (59%) and coloration efficiency (593 cm(2)/C for 95% switching) with a low switching time (0.7 s) due to the presence of POSS cage in the polymer backbone. In addition, PEDOS-POSS polymer film was highly robust and stable under ambient conditions (without purging the electrolyte solution with inert gas). Polymer films demonstrated high electrochemical stability; for example, it retained 76% of its electroactivity after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the polymers exhibited fluorescent properties and exhibited a reddish orange emission centered about at 640 nm. Based on the findings, to the best of our knowledge, it can be concluded that the polymers are the first examples of soluble and fluorescent PEDOS derivatives. The monomers were electrochemically polymerized via potentiodynamic or potentiostatic methods. The monomers and their polymers exhibited lower oxidation potentials (1.16 V and 1.06 V for monomers; 0.93 V and 0.80 V for polymers vs. Ag/AgCl) and red shifts of the whole dual-band absorption spectra upon moving from S to Se. Intramolecular charge transfer properties of the monomers and the polymers were demonstrated by using electroanalytical and optical methods. Chemically obtained soluble polydithienylpyrrole (c-PSNS-P) bearing pyrene appendages is a homogeneous and uniform polymer with a number averaged molecular weight of 15,200 g/mol. The polymer exhibits both multi-electrochromic and fluorescent properties. Upon oxidation, the color of electrochemically obtained polymer (e-PSNS-P) changes from yellowish orange to greenish yellow and to green/blue and finally to blue. All rights reserved.Master Thesis Yeni Ditiyenosilol Esaslı Kromik Polimerlerin Sentezi ve Karakterizasyonu(2015) Al-jumaılı, Mohammed; Cihaner, AtillaStille kenetlenme tepkimesi ile tiyofen (P1) ve bitiyofen (P2) içeren 2-etilhekzil sübstitüeli ditiyenosilol esaslı çözünür polimerler sentezlenmiştir. Polimerler nükleer magnetik rezonans (NMR), jel geçirgenlik kromotografisi (GPC), taramalı elektron mikroskobu (SEM) ve termal gravimetrik analiz (TGA) teknikleri kullanılarak karakterize edilmiştir. Silol halkası üzerindeki 2-etilhekzil sübstitüentlerinin varlığı polimerlerin yaygın çözücülerde çözünmesini sağlamıştır. GPC ölçümlerine göre, polimerler P1 ve P2'nin ağırlık ortalama moleküler ağırlıkları sırasıyla 2.30 çok dağılımlılık belirtesi (PDI) ile 70977 ve 1.42 PDI ile 110439 bulunmuştur. Tolüen çözeltisi içeresindeki floresans polimerlerin maksimum ışıma bantları P1 için 634 nm ve P2 için 613 nm'dir. Polimerlerin çözelti ve film formlarındaki kimyasal ve elektrokimyasal katkılandırılmaları morötesi-görünür (UV-vis) spektroskopi tekniği ile görüntülenmiştir. Polimerler kromik (kemokromik ve elektrokromik) özellik göstermektedirler. Nötr polimer filmlerinin renkleri P1 için mor ve P2 için kızılımsı kahverengi iken her iki polimer yükseltgen hallerinde geçirgen gökyüzü mavisine sahiptirler. Polimerlerin film formunda band aralıkları P1 için 1.81 eV ve P2 için 1.92 eV olarak hesaplanmıştır. Ayrıca, polimerlerin elektrokromik cihaz uygulamaları yapılmıştır. The polymer shows both electrochromic and fluorescent properties (the emission of yellow (545 nm) and yellowish green light (524 nm) in solid state and in THF solution, respectively). It is noteworthy that P5 has a specific optical band gap (2.2 eV) to reflect the yellow color in the neutral state.
