Article Blockchain Integration for Circular Economy Adoption in Steel Construction(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2026-02-25) Bilgin, Gozde; Birgonul, M. Talat; Akcay, Emre Caner; Dikmen, Irem; Demir, BerkanPurposeThe circular economy (CE) is an economic model aimed at minimizing waste and optimizing resource use by extending lifecycles through recycling, reuse, and other strategies. This shift from the traditional linear model (take-make-dispose) is crucial for a more sustainable and resilient built environment. Given its environmental impact, the steel construction industry holds significant importance in driving sustainability and CE efforts. This study aims to explore the potential of a blockchain(BC)-based framework to overcome barriers hindering the adoption of CE principles within the industrial steel construction sector, thereby promoting sustainability and circularity in the built environment.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual BC framework is proposed to enable effective recording, storing, and sharing of process-related data among stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of construction materials. The framework's validity is assessed through a focus group study conducted at a steel construction company, involving expert evaluations.FindingsExpert evaluations indicate that the BC-based framework can significantly enhance CE adoption by improving information flow, raising awareness, and fostering collaboration among ecosystem participants.Originality/valueThe study introduces an innovative application of BC technology tailored for the steel construction sector to address specific CE barriers, offering a novel approach that facilitates digital and sustainability transitions.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 13A Decentralized Application for Secure Messaging in a Trustless Environment(Ieee, 2018) Abdulaziz, Mohamed; Culha, Davut; Yazici, AliBlockchain technology has been seeing widespread interest as a means to ensure the integrity, confidentiality and availability of data in a trustless environment. They are designed to protect data from both internal and external cyberattacks by utilizing the aggregated power of the network to resist malicious efforts. In this article, we will create our own decentralized messaging application utilizing the Ethereum Whisper protocol. Our application will be able to send encrypted messages both securely and anonymously. We will utilize the Ethereum platform to deploy our blockchain network. This application would be resistant to most suppression tactics due to its distributed nature and adaptability of its communication protocol.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 14A Decentralized Application for Secure Messaging in a Trustless Environment(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018-12) Abdulaziz,M.; Yazıcı, Ali; Culha,D.; Yazici,A.; Çulha, Davut; Yazıcı, Ali; Çulha, Davut; Software Engineering; Software EngineeringBlockchain technology has been seeing widespread interest as a means to ensure the integrity, confidentiality and availability of data in a trustless environment. Blockchain as an information technology can be utilized to help solve these issues and establish sustainable tourism globally. However, the challenges to blockchain adoption in the tourism industry have not yet been examined systematically. The goal of this study, therefore, is three-fold: we first identify the challenges to blockchain using literature review and expert opinions. Then, we examine them using the proposed rough Interpretive Structural Modeling - Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication based on expert judgments. Finally, we link these challenges to diffusion of innovation theory. The results suggest that "lack of technical maturity" and "lack of interoperability" are the most important challenges of blockchain in the tourism industry. The findings of the study support macro- and micro-level decision-making in tourism industry's prospective applications of blockchain.Article Citation - WoS: 36Citation - Scopus: 44A Transformative Solution for Construction Safety: Blockchain-Based System for Accident Information Management(Elsevier, 2023-10) Ahmadisheykhsarmast, Salar; Aminbakhsh, Saman; Sonmez, Rifat; Uysal, FurkanEffective management of accident information is a crucial component of safety management within the construction industry, as it reflects the safety performance of the company and allows them to identify the root causes of accidents and prevent similar accidents in the future. However, existing safety information systems provide self-owned, isolated, and centralized environments and fail to present a secure, transparent, and trustworthy platform for monitoring and management of accident information. To address these issues, this paper presents a novel decentralized blockchain-based system for accident/incident information management of construction projects. The proposed system leverages the benefits and advantages of blockchain, smart contracts, and decentralized IPFS storage to address the security transparency, tampering, and trustworthiness issues of the conventional approaches. The proposed system is simulated by using real-world construction accident data to demonstrate how blockchain technology can provide a novel solution to assure security, transparency, authenticity, availability, and immutability of the accident/incident data for improving safety management.Article Citation - WoS: 46Citation - Scopus: 57Towards a Circular Economy: Investigating the Critical Success Factors for a Blockchain-Based Solar Photovoltaic Energy Ecosystem in Turkey(Elsevier, 2021-12) Erol, Ismail; Peker, Iskender; Ar, Ilker Murat; Turan, Ismet; Searcy, CoryNovel business models can be implemented through digital platforms to enable better circular economy (CE) performance in the renewable energy industry. For example, blockchain can assist in developing innovative business models throughout the solar photovoltaic energy ecosystem (SPVEE) to improve CE. Ranked fifth in total installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity, Turkey, as a developing country, should take the necessary steps and make progress towards achieving CE in the SPVEE. The solar PV industry requires further innovation to address the negative environmental impact of existing linear business models. To ensure favorable results, identifying and evaluating critical success factors (CSFs) are necessary. However, no study has investigated CSFs for SPVEE or any other renewable energy source to achieve a blockchain-based infrastructure towards increased CE performance. Therefore, the goal of this study is to identify and examine the CSFs to improve the performance of a blockchain-based SPVEE towards CE in Turkey. To this end, first, the CSFs for blockchain-based SPVEE were identified through both a literature review and the Nominal Group Technique (NGT). Then, Intuitionistic Fuzzy (IF)DEMATEL was used to explore their interrelationships based on the expert data. Finally, IF-DELPHI was employed to validate the results. Our findings suggested that effective government incentive programs and regulations are significant for blockchain-based SPVEE towards CE in Turkey. The findings of this study assist macro and micro decision-making in the potential implementation of blockchain in Turkish SPVEE to improve CE. They are also invaluable for other countries and can be used as a reference point. (c) 2021 International Energy Initiative. Published by Elsevier Inc. Although it has a high potential to influence organizational strategies for adoption into respective operations, it has not been widely explored yet. This study aims to assess the sectoral diversity in the timing of organizational adoption of blockchain through selected organizational factors. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted based on a sample of 208 IT professionals. The data was collected using an instrument containing 17 questions. The existence of sector diversity was statistically analyzed using the Least Square Regression method. Findings The results indicate that, except for management support and perceived ease of use, all the other factors in the analysis significantly influence sector diversity in terms of blockchain adoption timing. Originality/value Although blockchain has received attention from researchers, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no published work in the literature that explores the organizational factors influencing sectoral differences in the timing of blockchain technology adoption. Therefore, our work is unique in the related literature since we present analyses for the diversity between public and private sectors by modeling the factors affecting the intentions for the timing of blockchain adoption as part of the organizations' IT infrastructure.
