    Evaluation of Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines for Prediction of Kappa Factor in Western Turkiye

    The recent seismic activity on the west coast of Turkiye, including the Aegean Sea region, indicates that a closer focus is necessary on this region. Located in an active tectonic regime of north-south extension with multiple basins on soft soil deposits, the region has a high seismic hazard. Recently, as a combination of basin effects and building vulnerability, the October 30, 2020, Samos event (Mw = 7.0) caused localized significant damage and collapse in Izmir city center despite the 70 km distance from the earthquake source. In spite of this activity, studies on site characterization and site response modeling, including local velocity models and kappa estimates, are still limited in this region. Kappa values exhibit regional characteristics, which necessitates local kappa estimates from past earthquake data for use in region-specific applications. To make the prediction, we used three-component strong ground motion records from accelerometer stations with known VS30 values in western Turkiye that are a part of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency's Turkish National Strong Ground Motion Observation Network. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) algorithms have been implemented to build the prediction model. Three factors, such as distance, magnitude, and site class, are included in the kappa evaluation process. The performance of the models in kappa evaluation is calculated based on wellknown accuracy measures. The MARS model showed better performance compared to MLR over the selected sites concerning all performance measures. This finding may challenge the most commonly assumed linear models of kappa in the literature.

    A New E-Commerce Model Suggestion of Agricultural Products

    This study aims to create an e-commerce application that enables farmers to sell their products directly to their customers without resorting to intermediaries by a smart cargo box. It presents a method by which the agricultural industry can gain momentum in e-commerce. The main contributions of the study are an e-commerce application that enables farmers to sell their products directly to the customer without the need for an intermediary and the design and implementation of a smart cargo box that is tailored to carry agricultural items throughout the delivery process that locks and unlocks only via QR code generated by the application after order. Django FrameworkNext.js, React.js, and Redux are used for the system development. The database is created with PostgreSQL using migrations, and AmazonWeb Services is used for this database. The "ESP32 Cam" is used to read the QR Code.

    Development of Ni-Al Composites Reinforced With Recycled Aa7075+aa1050 and Ceramics Produced by the Sintering Plus Forging Process

    In this study, the microstructural formation and static/cyclic compression behavior of "Ni-Al+AA7075 +AA1050"-based composites reinforced with ceramics (TiC-TiB2) have been evaluated. It is aimed at creating a new design to be an alternative to traditional alloys/composites used in the aeronautical industry. These composites are generally produced using a combined method that we call "sinter + forging processes". The static and dynamic properties and also the microstructure (including the distribution of reinforcement elements) are evaluated in detail.

    Static and Fatigue Behaviour of Recycled Thinsheet "ti-Al Based Composites Produced by Hot Forging Diffusion Process

    Within the framework of the common research project, the mechanical properties and fatigue behaviour of recycled thin sheet Ti-Al-based composites reinforced with atomized scrap aluminium (AA7075) and Nb elements have been evaluated. All the thin sheet sandwich structures were produced by the hot forging process, which is a semi-solid-forming process similar to partial melting hot forging. The effect of the chemical bonds during the production of these multifunctional sandwich composite structures was analysed using 3-point bending tests under static and dynamic (fatigue) loading conditions. Additional tensile tests have been carried out to evaluate the mating effect. Interface and microstructure of these composites have also been evaluated using scanning electron microscopy.

    A Methodological Approach To Verify Architecture Resiliency

    Architecture-first approach to address software resiliency is becoming the mainstream development method for mission-critical and software-intensive systems. In such approach, resiliency is built into the system from the ground up, starting with a robust software architecture design. As a result, a flaw in the design of a resilient architecture affects the system's ability to anticipate, withstand, recover from, and adapt to adverse conditions, stresses, attacks, or compromises on cyber-resources. In this paper, we present an architecture-centric reasoning and verification methodology for detecting design weaknesses in resilient systems. Our goal is to assist software architects in building sound architectural models of their systems. We showcase our approach with the aid of an Autonomous Robot modeled in AADL, in which we use our methodology to uncover three architectural weaknesses in the adoption of three architectural tactics.

    Relationships Between Stock Markets: Causality Between G8 Countries and Turkey

    This study investigated relationships between stock markets in the Group of Eight (G8) countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK, and the USA) and the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) by estimating eight different vector autoregressions (VARs). We applied the Johansen and Juselius cointegration test to identify the long-run relations between the indices. The modified Granger causality test proposed by Toda and Yamamoto was conducted to identify the causality, then forecast variance decomposition and impulse response analysis were employed to explore the impacts of unexpected shocks in the G8 countries' stock markets on the ISE. The results showed that there was no cointegration between the ISE and the G8 countries' markets, but they still affected the ISE to different degrees, and the DAX-ISE 100, CAC 40-ISE 100, and FTSE MIB-ISE 100 causal relationships were bidirectional.

    User Experience Over Time With Personal Assistants of Mobile Banking Application in Turkey

    Being able to chat with artificial intelligence-based applications has been changing user interaction and has opened doors for a various number of new user experiences. The new apps that emerged lately with new technologies now launched in mobile banking applications as the form of personal assistants. This paper aims to research what features of the assistants affect the overall user experience. At the end of the study, a possible design guideline for designing these assistants in Turkey discussed, since most of the existing guidelines are for personal assistants for everyday life. Twelve users of Maxi, one of the most used personal mobile banking assistant, participated in the research and evaluated their experience after 15 days of usage. The research showed that their impression was positive during the first interview but during the second interview, there was a decline for all values of the impressions of user experience. In the end, the results showed that the original application of the bank was more preferable than the personal assistant.

    Solid-State Reduction Studies for Recovery of Iron From Red Mud

    Red mud or bauxite residue can be regarded as a by-product of aluminum extraction process since it contains a significant amount of iron and some valuable elements. Therefore, the treatment of red mud has been a hot topic for some decades. Last year, the authors started a laboratory-scale project dealing with stepwise recovery of valuable elements from red mud of Seydisehir Aluminum Plant, Turkey. The first step is related to the recovery of iron and pyrometallurgical methods (solid-state reduction and smelting) are currently being performed. Nonferrous metals will then be selectively leached in the second step. In TMS 2019, the authors outlined the literature related to the smelting studies for iron recovery from bauxite residue. In the extent of the present work, a literature review relevant to the solid-state reduction studies for recovery of iron from red mud was presented.

    A Study on Recovery of Iron from Red Mud by Solid State Reduction Followed by Magnetic Separation

    Red mud is a waste material of the Bayer process for alumina production from bauxite ore. Red mud is generally pumped to disposal in an artificial pond which is accompanied by great land occupation and environmental issues. Many researches in different fields have been carried out to evaluate the red mud. Of these, researches on recovering valuable metals from red mud are the most successful. In this study, recovery of iron, which is the most abundant metal in red mud, was investigated. A red mud sample with 34% Fe2O3 was used. Solid state carbothermic reduction followed by wet magnetic separation was performed to recover iron. Reduction was carried out at temperatures 1000-1200 degrees C. Reduced samples were ground and subjected to wet magnetic separation. The effect of reduction temperature and grinding time were investigated on the metallization of iron and the iron content of the final concentrate.

    A Comparison of Neural Network Approaches for Network Intrusion Detection

    Nowadays, network intrusion detection is an important area of research in computer network security, and the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become increasingly popular in this field. Despite this, the research concerning comparison of artificial neural network architectures in the network intrusion detection is a relatively insufficient. To make up for this lack, this study aims to examine the neural network architectures in network intrusion detection to determine which architecture performs best, and to examine the effects of the architectural components, such as optimization functions, activation functions, learning momentum on the performance. For this purpose, 6480 neural networks were generated, their performances were evaluated by conducting a series of experiments on KDD99 dataset, and the results were reported. This study will be a useful reference to researchers and practitioners hoping to use ANNs in network intrusion detection.
