Abstract
Translation technology is meeting with new practices due to new developments in information and software technology. Nowadays, interdisciplinary studies and industrial necessities increase the demand for translation studies. Machine translation and computer-aided translation first come to mind when translation technology is brought up. In this thesis, it is examined how machine translation tools, which are now facilitated in the translation of technical texts with specialized domain terminology, and which have been observed to be highly successful compared to the past, will perform in literary translation. In this context, this study aims to reveal the most functioning machine translation service with commonly used post-editing tools in literary text samples. Moreover, it is also designed to draw the attention of translators to the current state of machine translation tools and post-editing tools in literary translation. The study is based on communicative translation theory, which aims to enable the translator to convey the meaning of the source text by retaining the words in the source text. It is designed to be carried out with a qualitative method as the thesis itself is based on the self-evaluations of machine translation and post-editing tools. The data collection tools of this thesis are Deep L, Google Translate, Microsoft, and Promt machine translation tools supported by 'QTranslate' an online translation tool for machine translation applications, and 'Grammarly', 'Reverso', 'Language Tool' online independent post-editing tools. Descriptive and metaphorical sentences which are randomly selected from the novel by Sebahattin Ali, İçimizdeki Şeytan (1940) were analysed through data collection tools. At the end of the study, it is found that Deep L machine translation tool and Grammarly post-editing tool can perform proximate literary translation with a minimal human touch. Keywords: Literary translation, machine translation, post-editing, Deep L, Grammarly
