Abstract
In this master's thesis, it is shown that to what end the translation contributed to the formation of Turkish terminology in the terminology development studies at the initial years of the Turkish Republic. Just like in the thought and literature fields, in scientific fields also, having heavily affected by the Eastern civilization, the Ottoman Empire continued its sovereignty until 20th century. Undoubtedly, lagging behind the technological advances played a major role in the Empire's collapse. Taking all their intellectual and scientific knowledge from the Arabic and Persian sources, the Ottoman scholars stayed way behind the cultural and technological developments rising after the renaissance in the West. No matter some efforts were made to fix the situation in the last 150 years of the empire, these efforts stayed fruitless as there were no consensus among the Turkish scholars in those years. With the proclamation of the republic by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, there appeared a strong necessity for Westernization in all spheres of the nation, such as culture, science and arts. In this reformation and modernization period, the necessity for reformation in Turkish language was foreseen and as it is vital in understandability of the science, a great deal of emphasis was put on the terminology matter, also. In this phase, the Turkish Language Institution, which was established for conducting researches on the better understandability of the Turkish language, and the universities contributed much to the Turkish terminology studies. This work dwells on showing the importance of translation on the formation of terminology studies.
