Abstract

Throughout history, people tried to eliminate their grief, social and economic challenges, and the political stress of their period by relying on jokes and seeking joy in life. Translation of the jokes extended to the country they were born in and spread worldwide. In the 13th century, Nasreddin Hodja tried to relieve people's grief with wit and humour. He gave people hope and happiness with his jokes full of wisdom and lessons. This study examines the joke translation of Nasreddin Hodja into English. The study focuses on two books, Nasreddin Hodja Stories, written by Mahmet Hengirmen, and Nasreddin Hodja, written by Alpay Kabacalı. Instead of reviewing their translated full text into English, only cultural elements were focused on. The translation of these cultural elements is examined according to the Dynamic and Formal Equivalence methods of Eugene Nida. The ways to transfer cultural, religious, and military aspects from Turkish to English were studied, and whether there was a loss of meaning was evaluated. This study provides an analytical perspective on the joke translation by examining the translation of cultural elements with various subheadings from English into Turkish.
