Shakespeare'in Othello ve Venedik Taciri Oyunlarında Rönesans Dönemi'ndeki Ataerkil Toplum

Abstract

Bu tez, Shakespeare'in Othello ve Venedik Taciri oyunlarında ataerkillik kavramını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu iki oyun, Ortaçağ ve Rönesans döneminde erkek egemen toplumun kadınları nasıl etkilediğini göstermektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Othello ve Venedik Taciri'ni feminist bir bakış açısıyla incelemektir. Ayrıca bu tez, bu iki oyunun kadın karakterlerinin ataerkil topluma nasıl başkaldırdığını tartışacaktır. Bu tez, genel olarak önceki dönemlerde ve özel olarak Rönesans döneminde kadınların çektiği acıları konu almaktadır. Rönesans döneminde, kadınların kendilerini ispatlamak için erkekler kadar fazla bir şansı olmadığı söylenebilir. This thesis aims to study the concept of patriarchy in Shakespeare's Othello and The Merchant of Venice. These two plays illustrate how the male-dominated society affected women in the Medieval and the Renaissance era. The goal of this study is to analyze Othello and The Merchant of Venice from a feminist perspective. As well as, this thesis will discuss how the female characters of these two plays rebel against the patriarchal society. This thesis talks about the suffering of women in the previous eras in general and in the Renaissance in particular. It can be said that women did not have a strong chance to prove themselves as men did in the Renaissance era. It was practicing all kinds of oppression to abolish the role of women in the patriarchal society. The theoretical chapter will deal with facts and details about the suffering of women in the Renaissance era in terms of education, work, and their role in society. In addition to that, this chapter will deal with the theory of The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and the essay of A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. The next two chapters will discuss the role of female characters Desdemona, Portia, and Jessica in Shakespeare's Othello and The Merchant of Venice and their impact on society and how will their role and reaction be around a society that only sees them as the second gender.
