This paper analyzes the postmodern techniques, which Peter Ackroyd uses in his historiographic metafictions, namely The Great Fire of London, Hawksmoor and First Light. The study includes background information on the metafiction genre and briefly takes a look at new historicism and the historiographic metafiction genre. The analysis has been done in terms of narration and plot, characters, time and setting, and language. Through the employment of postmodern methods, such as pastiche, parody, self-reflexivity and, intertextuality, Ackroyd problematizes issues such as fiction and reality, and concept of time, while keeping a style very much adherent to his British predecessors, calling this notion, Englishness. In brief, the paper aims at proving how Ackroyd?s historiographic metafictions contribute to the postmodern understanding of fiction, reality and time.
