The Atılım University School of Architecture was founded in 2009. As for the number of students, our School is a medium-sized one, as is the case with many others in Europe. As a profession the expectation for which is to deal with people, society and environment in many aspects, architecture requires a similarly sophisticated education. In the Undergraduate Program at the Department of Architecture, we are working to establish such sophistication within the balance of theory and practice. Following the Integrated Doctorate Program that opened in 2010 for undergraduate and graduate alumni, the Thesis and Project Programs at Graduate Levels were opened in 2018. The self-evaluation studies of the Department that are run in coordination with the intra-evaluation and strategy studies of Atılım University are performed in relation to the external evaluations by the Architectural Accrediting Board (MİAK). The Department of Architecture is a member of the “European Association for Architectural Education” (EAAE).

Architecture Integrated PhD Program, which was initiated in the year 2012 at the Graduate School of Natural & Applied Sciences, runs graduate education and research studies leading to PhD degree for the students bearing bachelor and master degrees. The offical educational language of the Program is Turkish. The Program is available for applications by graduates from different disciplines (architecture; urban design; city and regional planning; industrial design; interior design; landscape design) who wish to be researcher or academician in any of the areas of specialization in architecture specified by IMP. Architecture Master’s Programs (Thesis-Oriented & Project-Oriented) were started in the year 2018. The official educational languages of these Programs are Turkish and English. These programs are available for applications by canditates who have undergraduate degrees in architecture.

Abstract

Kentsel kamusal alanlar kentteki aktivitelerin çoğunun gerçekleştiği alanlar olarak kentsel yaşamı şekillendirmekte, mimari yapılar ile kurdukları ilişki kentsel mekanın oluşumunda, kentsel yaşamın düzenlenmesinde ve kamusal alanda gerçekleşen ilişkiler üzerinde etkili olmaktadır. Kamusal alanları çevreleyen mimari yapıların kullanımları, işlevleri, yapısal özellikleri ve iç-dış arasında kurdukları ilişki gibi pek çok faktör yapı arayüzlerinin tasarımına bağlıdır. 21.yy'da bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerindeki gelişmelerin sonucu olarak, yapı arayüzünde gerçekleşen etkileşimli tasarımlarla arayüzler, kullanıcıları tarafından değiştirilebilir veya sıcaklık, ses gibi çevresel koşullardan etkilenerek değişebilir bir yapıya bürünmüştür. Etkileşimli yapı arayüzleri kamusal alanda gerçekleşen etkinlikleri çeşitlendirip, yeni kullanımların, yeni kullanıcıların ve yeni mekansal tanımlamaların oluşturarak, insanlar ve fiziksel çevre arasında yeni bir iletişim ve ifade ortamı yaratma fırsatı sunmaktadır. Bundan dolayı, etkileşimli tasarımın kamusal alan-arayüz-insan ilişkisi içinde irdelenmesi önem kazanmaktadır. Bu tez kapsamında, karşılaştırmalı analiz yöntemi ile farklı kamusal alanlarda bulunan ve farklı özelliklerdeki etkileşimli yapı arayüzü tasarımları, kamusal alandaki etkilerine göre incelenmiştir. Seçilen etkileşimli tasarım örnekleri etkileşimli sistemin kurulma amacı ve kurulduğu yapının mimari özellikleri dikkate alınarak sınıflandırılmış, kamusal alandaki etkilerinin değerlendirilmesi yapılmış, tasarımlar çevre ile etkileşim biçimlerine ve kamusal alan üzerindeki etkilerine göre değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak kamusal alanların, kullanıcıya sunduğu mekansal ve yaşamsal kalitenin arttırılması, kullanım değerinin ve kullanımının arttırılması ve sürdürülmesi için etkileşimli yapı arayüzlerinin sahip olması gereken özellikler tespit edilmiştir. Bu tespitlerde yola çıkılarak etkileşimli yapı arayüzlerinin tasarımında dikkate alınması gereken ölçütlere, kamusal alanda sundukları etkileşim olanaklarına ve kamusal alan kullanımına etkilerine ulaşılmıştır.
Urban public spaces shape urban life as areas where most of the activities in the city take place, and the relationship they establish with architectural structures is effective on the formation of the urban space, the regulation of urban life and the relations in the public space. Many factors such as the use, functions, structural features and the relationship between the interior and exterior of the architectural structures surrounding the public spaces depend on the design of the building interfaces. As a result of the developments in information and communication technologies in the 21st century, the interfaces can be changed by the users with the interactive designs realized in the building interface, or they have a structure that can be changed by being affected by environmental conditions such as temperature and sound. Interactive building interfaces offer the opportunity to create a new communication and expression environment between people and the physical environment by diversifying the activities taking place in the public space, creating new uses, new users and new spatial definitions. Therefore, it is important to examine interactive design within the public space-interface-human relationship. Within the scope of this thesis, interactive building interface designs with different features in different public spaces were examined according to their effects in the public space, using the comparative analysis method. Selected interactive design examples were classified considering the purpose of establishing the interactive system and the architectural features of the building in which it was installed, the effects on the public space were evaluated, and the designs were evaluated according to their interaction with the environment and their effects on the public space. As a result, the features that the interactive building interfaces should have have been determined in order to increase the spatial and vital quality offered by the public spaces to the user, to increase and maintain the use value and use. Based on these determinations, the criteria to be considered in the design of interactive building interfaces, the interaction opportunities they offer in the public space and their effects on the use of public space have been reached.
