Residual stress state and hardness depth in electric discharge machining: De-ionized water as dielectric liquid
(Taylor & Francis inc, 2005) Ekmekci, B; Elkoca, O; Tekkaya, AE; Erden, A
Procedures and results of experimental work to measure residual stresses and hardness depth in electric discharge machined surfaces are presented. Layer removal method is used to express the residual stress profile as a function of depth caused by a die sinking type EDM. Thin stressed layers are removed from machined samples by electrochemical machining. Corresponding deformations due to stress relaxation are recorded for each removal to determine the stress profile from elasticity theory. The relational dependence of the machining parameters with residual stresses is obtained and a semi-empirical model is proposed for plastic mold steel for de-ionized water as dielectric liquid. These stresses are found to be increasing rapidly with respect to depth, attaining to its maximum value, around the yield strength, and then fall rapidly to compressive residual stresses in the core of the material since the stresses within plastically deformed layers are equilibrated with elastic stresses.

Biological System Analysis in Bioinspired Conceptual Design (bicd) for Bioinspired Robots
(Romanian Soc Control Tech informatics, 2011) Eroglu, Aylin Konez; Eroğlu, Aylin Konez; Erden, Zuhal; Erden, Zühal; Erden, Abdulkadir; Erden, Abdulkadir; Eroğlu, Aylin Konez; Erden, Zühal; Erden, Abdulkadir; Department of Mechatronics Engineering; Department of Mechatronics Engineering; Mechatronics Engineering; Mechatronics Engineering; Department of Mechatronics Engineering; Mechatronics Engineering
Bioinspired design (BID) provides a systematic way for bioinspired applications. Although several BID approaches as well as some tools and databases are available in the literature, the studies on BID are still challenging for designers and/or engineers because of limitations of current BID approaches. There are mainly two directions related with these limitations. One of them is the representation of knowledge on biological systems and the second is the problem of transforming this knowledge into engineering domain. These limitations expose two questions; firstly, "What knowledge is required to describe biological systems?" and "How this knowledge is represented?" and secondly, "How this knowledge is transformed into the engineering domain?". This paper presents a study which aims to answer the first question about knowledge required to represent biological systems. This knowledge is obtained during "Analysis of Biological Systems" stage of a new suggested bioinspired conceptual design (BICD) procedure.

A Petri Net Approach To Behavioural Simulation of Design Artefacts With Application To Mechatronic Design
(Springer Heidelberg, 2003) Erden, Z; Erden, A; Erkmen, AM
A Petri net-based design inference network (PNDN) architecture is presented in this paper. The network models the logical behaviour of any design artefact developed by designers at the conceptual design level by representing the subfunctions and their inter-relationships to perform a required overall function. The theoretical framework in developing the PNDN is based on the improved theory of Petri nets and hybrid automata. The theoretical PNDN architecture was implemented in a C++ based software called the design network simulator (DNS). The logical behaviour of a design artefact is modelled through the token flow within the PNDN. The token flow model is developed both for deterministic and nondeterministic PNDN, which involves uncertainties. In this paper we present the mathematical formalism of the deterministic token flow through the PNDN. We also provide a conceptual design example in order to explain the application of our theoretical architecture for structuring the PNDN.

Conceptual Design of a Rose Harvesting Robot for Greenhouses
    (2013) Gürel,C.; Erden,A.
Agricultural applications has made over thousands years, and the entire processes dependent to people. The dependency increases the labor time of the process and as well as cost of the products. To overcome this problem, the automated systems on the agricultural processes are needed in the place of humans. Many implementations are made on the harvesting processes in different products, i.e., rose, apple, cherry, strawberry, etc. which shows the importance of automation in the harvesting. The company needs a system that makes harvesting of the roses instead of human in greenhouse. Conceptual design of rose harvesting robot is given in this paper which is covers need, intended users, functions and top level intelligence algorithm.

Rose Stem Branch Point Detection and Cutting Point Location for Rose Harvesting Robot
    (Mechatronics and Machine Vision in Practice, 2015) Gürel,C.; Hassan,M.; Zadeh,G.; Erden,A.
The primary objective of the study is to develop a method that can locate the proper location of cutting point of rose stem for robotic rose harvesting. Stem tracking and cutting operation are achieved using with the help of stereo vision techniques. The cutting point has a vital importance for cut rose harvesting in greenhouse which affects the efficiency of new shoot from the cut stem. In agricultural process, the cutting point depends on thickness of stem and eye on stem. Locating the eye is difficult by image processing thus another relation for cut point estimation was performed. The relation between thickness and cut length can lead to relation for cut point estimation. 239 data is collected from a greenhouse and linear relation with some deviation was acquired. To perform this relation, branch point location algorithm was developed. The proposed algorithm has three steps: branch point detection; thickness calculation; and cutting length estimation. The algorithm for branch detection performs quite well to detect and locate the position of the point when there occur no overlapping. The results of branch point detection are adequate for implementing to the robot. © 2015, Mechatronics and Machine Vision in Practice. All rights reserved.

Creative Design Engineering Education for Human-Society Integrated Intelligent Systems
(Sage Publications Inc, 2026) Erden, Zuhal; Erden, Abdulkadir
The essence and vital roots of scientific activities create theoretical propositions and models that provide unique integrity of the associated concepts, definitions, approaches and methodological components. Design engineering education has made great progress to date by integrating modern methods and tools into the existing process models focused on unique curriculum programs for students' progress during various scientific and technical levels. Contemporary and integrated socio-scientific environments, however, are generally more productive and initiative for future success stories of engineering graduates with high qualifications and science/technology-motivated professional life. Today's global transition from the "industrial-digital age" to the "sustainable knowledge economy and digital society" opens a new path for design engineering education, enforcing a paradigm shift towards training creative professionals who develop and implement new knowledge in real-world social environments. This paper presents and discusses the models, methods and tools to establish a road-map into next-generation creative design engineering education paradigm.

A Semi-Empirical Approach for Residual Stresses in Electric Discharge Machining (edm)
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2006) Ekmekci, Bulent; Tekkaya, A. Erman; Erden, Abdulkadir
High residual stresses are developed on the surfaces of electric discharge machined parts. In this study, layer removal method is used to measure the residual stress profile as a function of depth beneath the surface caused by die sinking type EDM. Cracking and its consequences on residual stresses are also studied on samples machined at long pulse durations. A modified empirical equation is developed for scaling residual stresses in machined surfaces with respect to operating conditions. In this model, a unit amplitude shape function representing change in curvature with respect to removal depth is proposed. The proposed form is found to be a special form of a Gauss Distribution. It is the sum of two Gaussian peaks, with the same amplitude and pulse width but opposite center location. The form can be represented by three constant coefficients. These coefficients depend on the released energy by a power function. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
