    Modified resonant frequency computation for tunable equilateral triangular microstrip patch
    (Ieice-inst Electronics information Communications Eng, 2010) Aydın, Elif; Can, Sultan; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering
    In this paper, a new closed form expression is developed to accurately estimate the resonant frequency of an equilateral triangular patch. The proposed computation is also extended to the two-layer structure in order to define the air-gap tuning effect on the resonant frequency. The theory established in this paper is compared with the experimental and theoretical results available in the literature. The results of this study show a considerable improvement achieved over the previous theories within very small percentage errors for almost all cases.

    Analysis of the parameters that effects the operating frequencies and bandwidth of a Cpw-fed patch antenna;
    (2013) Can, Seçkin; Aydın, Elif; Can,S.; Aydin,E.; Can, Sultan; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; Department of Modern Languages
    In this study, the analysis of the effect of antenna parameters to the operating frequency is performed in a coplanar waveguide fed patch antenna. The effect of the size and the substrate of the design dual frequency antenna to the operating frequency and bandwidth are also evaluated. Bandwidth of the upper and lower frequency is also investigated and results are demonstrated. The method to increase the bandwidth is also presented by using the chosen parameters. © 2013 IEEE.

    NEURAL NETWORK BASED RESONANT FREQUENCY SOLVER FOR RECTANGULAR-SHAPED SHORTING PIN-LOADED ANTENNAS
    (Wiley, 2013) Can, Sultan; Aydın, Elif; Aydin, Elif; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering
    This study presents an artificial neural network (ANN) estimation of the operating frequencies of shorting pin-loaded rectangular microstrip patch antennas. A feed forward back propagation multilayer perceptron neural network structure is applied in the study. The results are compared with the ones in the literature and the FEM based simulation results. The results of the operating frequencies obtained by using this method are in very good agreement with the experimental results presented in the literature. Several antennas are also simulated by a finite element method based solver and these results are also compared with the results of the proposed neural network model. The average error of the lower frequency obtained by this study has a decrement of 2.025% when compared to the FEM based simulation software and for the upper frequency this difference is 6.835%. The effects of permittivity of the antenna, size of the dimensions of the rectangular patch, and the shorting pin position are also evaluated. In the light of the ANN model and the relations obtained two antennas in the same shape are produced and the results of these antennas are presented as well. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Operating frequency calculation of a shorting pin-loaded ETMA
    (Wiley-blackwell, 2012) Aydın, Elif; Can, Sultan; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering
    This article presents the calculation of upper and lower operating frequencies with the expressions of effective side length, effective permittivity, and correction factor to develop accurate lower and upper operating frequencies of a single feed, a shorting pin-loaded equilateral triangular patch, that is, analyzed through a cavity model. To insert permittivity and shorting pin position effects correction factor expressions are determined empirically for both upper and lower frequencies. The various positions of the shorting pin, substrate thickness and side length properties are considered by calculating both upper and lower frequencies. The results from this study are compared with research in the literature comprising results from both experimental and transmission line models. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (2013) Can, Seçkin; Kzlu,N.; Can, Sultan; Can,S.; Aydzn,E.; Department of Modern Languages; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering
    In this paper, a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed microstrip patch antenna is designed on finite element method based simulation program and fabricated in order to use reader antenna in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The results of the simulations and the produced antennas are presented in the study. The produced microstrip patch anten na has a 105MHz bandwidth and operates in between 895-1000 MHz . © 2013 IEEE.

    Çift bant üçgen yama antenlerde rezonans frekansının hesaplanması
    (2011) Can, Sultan; Aydın, Elif; Aydın, Elif; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering
    Bu çalışmada, eşkenar üçgen yama antenlerin ve çift frekanslı eşkenar üçgen yama antenlerinin çalışma frekanslarının hesaplanması üzerinde durulmuştur. Eşkenar üçgen yama antenin rezonant frekanslarının bulunmasında iki model önerilmiştir. Önerilen her iki model kovuk modeli ile analiz edilmiş olup etkin kenar uzunluğu ifadeleri kullanılmıştır. Birinci ve ikinci modellerde sırası ile dinamik ve etkin dielektrik sabiti ifadelerine yer verilmiştir. Modellerin sonuçları CST benzetimi sonuçları, deney sonuçları ve literatürdeki teorik sonuçlar ile kıyaslanmış, daha kesin sonuçlar elde edilmiştir. Çalışmada çift frekanslı eşkenar üçgen yama antenlerin çalışma frekanslarının hesaplanmasına da yer verilmiştir. Çalışmadaki anten kısa devre iğnesi ile kısa devre yapılarak, çift frekanslı eşkenar üçgen oluşturulmuştur. Üst ve alt frekanslarının hesaplanmasında empirik bir formül geliştirilmiştir. Sonuçlar ölçüm sonuçları ve iletim hattı modeli sonuçları ile kıyaslanmıştır. Tüm sonuçlar literatür değerleri ile kıyaslanıp, tartışılmıştır.

    Design and fabrication of dual-frequency h-shaped antenna;
    (2013) Can, Seçkin; Aydın, Elif; Can,S.; Aydin,E.; Can, Sultan; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; Department of Modern Languages
    In this study, the parameters that effects the operating frequency of dual frequency H-shaped antenna are examined. These parameters are determined as type of the dielectric constant of substrate, substrate thickness, dimensions of the antenna and dimensions of the slots that are used to obtain shape of H. The produced and simulated results of the proposed antennas are presented and compared with the studies in literature. © 2013 IEEE.

    A Survey on Lifelong Learning and Project-Based Learning Among Engineering Students
    (Elsevier Science Bv, 2014) Can, Sultan; Can, Sultan; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering
    Lifelong learning is a highly important issue that most of the governments emphasize on their education programs. It is commonly known that there are various requirements such as learning how to learn, improving communication skills, teamwork abilities and controlling time-money etc. In order to successful in professional life, besides theoretical knowledge. Most of these mentioned requirements are even needed in our daily life to be able to learn efficiently, in any desired field. This study presents the results of a survey carried out to evaluate engineering students' viewpoints regarding lifelong learning and project-based learning. Their perspective on "learning-by-doing" is also investigated. Several aspects in engineering are considered, and evaluation is formed according to these aspects. The importance of theoretical knowledge, oral and written communication skills, economic perspectives, time and budget control, teamwork abilities, learning-by-project and learning-by-doing are the parameters evaluated in the survey. A descriptive analyze is performed in order to evaluate the engineering students' viewpoint about learning at Atilim University. The proposed survey is conducted with 80 students from Faculty of Engineering and the results are illustrated. Based on results, the main issue that the participants highlight is the need of change in learning methods and they are underlying that they want to get integrated more into real world. This study may help the mentors to design a new curriculum for achieving success in the field, which will also be a pioneer the success in every field of life. (C) 2013 The Authors.
