Article Citation - WoS: 40Citation - Scopus: 52Variable Structure Control of a Class of Uncertain Systems(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2004) Efe, MÖ; Ünsal, C; Kaynak, O; Yu, XHThis brief paper proposes a method for tuning the parameters of a variable structure controller. The approach presented extracts the error at the output of the controller and applies a nonlinear tuning law using this error measure. The adaptation mechanism drives the state tracking error vector to the sliding hypersurface and maintains the sliding mode. In the simulations, the approach presented has been tested on the control of Dulling oscillator and the analytical claims have been justified under the existence of measurement noise, uncertainty and large nonzero initial errors. Each mode involves certain external disturbances and uncertainties. In this study, using the nonlinear model for the modes of the operation, robust and/or adaptive control systems are designed based on the models. These control strategies include five types of controllers: cascaded proportional-integral-derivative, active disturbance rejection controller, loop shaping, feedback error learning, and sliding mode controller. The study presents the design process of these controllers and evaluates the performances of the proposed control systems to track the reference signal and reject the uncertain forces including the parametric uncertainties and the external disturbances. This comparison is based on the mathematical performance measures and energy consumption. In addition, three architectures are presented to control the weight on bit during drilling process, and also to maintain a preset constant weight on bit, two control approaches are designed and presented.Article Citation - WoS: 25Citation - Scopus: 34Modelling and Controlling of Drill String Stick Slip Vibrations in an Oil Well Drilling Rig(Elsevier, 2022) Sadeghi, Amir Noabahar; Arikan, Kutluk Bilge; Ozbek, Mehmet Efe; Noabahar Sadeghi, AmirMitigating of drill string vibrations, plays a distinctive role in increase of rate of penetration and consequently decrease of the operation costs, prevent of severe damages to drill string and bit, increase of drilling operation quality and safety, and enhance the performances of the controllers. This study deals with modelling and controlling of drill string vibrations with focus on stick slip vibrations in vertical wells. The approach taken to subdivide the drill string into smaller torsional sections and model the complete system dynamically and employ the extracted torsional model to model the stick slip vibrations mathematically. To mitigate and or active control of stick slip vibrations, three architectures are developed and proposed, manipulation of the rotational speed, manipulation of the weight on bit, and increasing of the damping in the bottom of the drill string. The performance of each strategy is analysed individually as well as relative to each other, using a mathematical measure when the drill string length is divided into smaller torsional sections. By the aid of the simulations and mathematical measures, it is shown that manipulation of rotational speeds at the surface may not be an effective solution to reduce the stick slip vibrations, however manipulation of weight on bit and increasing of damping at the bottom of string can be two effective solutions to mitigate these kinds of vibrations. As a general conclusion, it is proved that the manipulation of bottom side drilling parameters is more effective than the manipulation of surface drilling parameters.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Multi Input Dynamical Modeling of Heat Flow With Uncertain Diffusivity Parameter(Taylor & Francis inc, 2003) Efe, MÖ; Özbay, HThis paper focuses on the multi-input dynamical modeling of one-dimensional heat conduction process with uncertainty on thermal diffusivity parameter. Singular value decomposition is used to extract the most significant modes. The results of the spatiotemporal decomposition have been used in cooperation with Galerkin projection to obtain the set of ordinary differential equations, the solution of which synthesizes the temporal variables. The spatial properties have been generalized through a series of test cases and a low order model has been obtained. Since the value of the thermal diffusivity parameter is not known perfectly, the obtained model contains uncertainty. The paper describes how the uncertainty is modeled and how the boundary conditions are separated from the remaining terms of the dynamical equations. The results have been compared with those obtained through analytic solution.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 3A robust on-line learning algorithm for intelligent control systems(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2003) Efe, MÖ; Kaynak, O; Wilamowski, BM; Yu, XHThis paper describes a novel error extraction approach for exploiting the strength of Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) optimization technique in intelligent control systems: Since the target value of the control signal is unknown, tuning of the controller parameters becomes a tedious task if the knowledge about the system and the environment is limited. The suggested methodology utilizes the sliding model control (SMC) technique. The error extraction scheme postulates the form of error on the applied control signal using the discrepancy from the prescribed reaching dynamics. The devised approach has been tested on the non-linear Duffing oscillator, which has been forced to follow a periodic orbit radically different from the natural one. The results obtained through a series of simulations have confirmed the high precision and robustness advantages without knowing the analytical details of the system under investigation. The issues of observation noise and the stability in the parametric space have approximately been addressed from the point of SMC perspective. E.; Department of Electrical & Electronics EngineeringAim. This study examined the changes in hydration status, body composition and body mass alterations during the camping period a pre world championship, World (N.=14) and National (N.=38) senior wrestlers (N.=52) preparing for the World Championships. Methods. Urine specific gravity, conductivity and color measurements with, body composition analyses were conducted at the beginning of the camp and the end of the camp. Results. In general, no significant differences were obtained between the world and national wrestlers in body mass and fat percentage (83.3 +/- 20-84.9 +/- 18 kg; 12 +/- 6%-11.2 +/- 4%, respectively). However, a significant difference was detected in the changes of body mass between groups (world decreased [800 +/- 1 g] - national increased [600 +/- 1 g] [P<0.05]). Body fat percentage was also observed to have a similar bias with a decrease and increase, but the changes were not significantly different (P>0.05). No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed between pre- and post-test values of urine specific gravity, conductivity or color for both national team wrestlers. Conclusion. Wrestlers achieved to adjust to weight category in a close of period through competition weigh in. Dehydration training programs should be sustained during the whole camp seasons including the last days before the weighing process for matches.Article Citation - WoS: 1İndüksiyon Ön Isıtmalı Bir Elektromanyetik Darbe Şekillendirme Sisteminin Deneysel Analizi(Gazi Univ, Fac Engineering Architecture, 2020) Baranoğlu, Besim; Özbek, Mehmet Efe; Aydın, ElifBu çalışmada, özellikle otomotiv, uçak, uzay ve savunma sanayinde kullanımları giderek artmakta olanalüminyum, magnezyum, titanyum ve nikel alaşımları gibi gevrek malzemeleri şekillendirebilmek amacıylatasarımı yapılan bir indüksiyon ısıtma sistemi ve bir elektromanyetik şekillendirme sistemi kurulmuştur.Devreye alınan sistemler Al7075 levhaları ile test edilmiştir. The controller operates in discrete time and the method presented describes an error measure that can be used if the task to be achieved is to drive the system under control to a predefined sliding regime. Once the task-specific output error is calculated, the neurocontroller parameters can be tuned so that the task is achieved. The paper postulates the strategy for discrete time representation of uncertain nonlinear systems belonging to a particular class. The performance of the proposed technique has been clarified on a third order nonlinear system, and the parameters of the controller are adjusted by using the error backpropagation algorithm. It is observed that the prescribed behavior can be achieved with a simple network configuration.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Design of a System Solution That Modernizes Legacy Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems as an Early Detection System(Sage Publications Ltd, 2018) Demir, Besir; Tumay, Ahmet; Ozbek, Mehmet Efe; Cavus, EnverBackground: In industrial disasters, early detection of problems and crisis management are critical for saving the lives of people and reducing the impact of disasters. Purpose: In this study, we design a special gateway system that bridges the gap between different communication protocols and enables legacy supervisory control and data acquisition systems to function early detection systems for potential industrial disasters. Methods: The system uses a new queue mechanism to substantially improve the problem of data loss found in conventional supervisory control and data acquisition systems and utilizes identification (ID) prioritization to enable early detection of problems. The proposed system is implemented and tested on a Linux-based, 3G-capable Modbus gateway system. Modbus is used as the communication protocol and 3G technology is utilized to provide high-speed wireless data transfer components. The Modbus gateway device uses an ARM-based EP9302 processor and has digital input/output, relay outputs, and RS485 outputs. Conclusion: This study is significant as it is the first work to show the application of the priority query execution method for Modbus gateway devices.
