Optimization of Parameter Set for Statcom Control System
(2010) Vural,A.M.; Bayindir,K.C.; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 01. Atılım University
STATCOM controlled power system shows highlynon-linear characteristics. In such a structure, linear controllers are easy to apply but difficult to tune. Fine tuning of controller parameters is necessary to meet transient performance requirements. In this paper, control system parameters of a STATCOM which is constructed from two six-pulse voltage source based converters are optimized by Simplex algorithm which is a non-linear and non-gradient method. System objective function to be minimized is based on a performance index and expressed in terms of measured and desired values of system variables. After optimization, performance of STATCOM control system consisting of two PI controllers and two leag/lag compensators has been tested and verified through a number of simulation studies investigating step-response performance. Precise and quick responses have been observed with optimized parameters. © 2010 IEEE.

Simplex Optimized Twelve-Pulse Statcom Control System and Lc Filter
(2011) Vural,A.M.; Bayindir,K.C.; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 01. Atılım University
AC and DC voltage controller parameters of 12 pulse STATCOM consisting of 2-VSCs and its passive LC filter parameters are optimized by non-linear and non-gradient Simplex method. Each optimization problem is based on a goal function with different performance indices. After optimization process, step response performance of AC and DC voltage controller of STATCOM, each having a PI controller cascaded with a lead/lag compensator, has been tested in PSCAD/EMTDC. Fast and absolute responses have been received from STATCOM control system which is connected to a 154 kV line. Moreover with the proposed method, parameters of LC filter connected to AC side of STATCOM have been optimized to keep total harmonic distortion under international standards, even at low switching frequencies. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2011.
