Oscar Wilde'ın Dorian Gray'in Portresi'ndeki Sansürün İlk ve En Son Çevirileri Üzerine Karşılaştırmalı Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Sansür, dilin başlangıcından günümüze kadar farklı biçimlerde, yerlerde ve zamanlarda karşımıza çıkabilen bir olgudur. Özellikle de politik yönden sıklıkla kullanılan bu yöntem çevirilerde de çevirmen tercihi veya dönemin şartlarına göre şekillenebilen bir gereklilik olarak uygulanabilmektedir. Orijinal yani kaynak metne hem yayın öncesi hem de yayın sonrası tabii tutulan özellikle de homoseksüellikle bağlantılı olan sosyal, kültürel, dini yönlerden uygulanan sansürün etkileri, orijinal metnin 120 yıl sonraya dek yayınlanmasına değin bilinmiyordu. Geleneksel bakış açısının değişmesi, insanların cinsel kimlik ve sosyal sorumluluk alanlarınla yaptığı çalışmaların da katkılarıyla cinsel farkındalığın tüm dünyada büyük bir ölçüde oluşturulması, söz konusu roman Dorian Gray'in Portesi'nin, yazarın ilk duygularını, düşüncelerini ve mesajlarını olduğu gibi okuyuca aktarmak istemiş olduğu sansürsüz metnin yayınlanmasını sağladı. Bu tezde savunulan sav, ilk olarak 2014 yılında Ülker İnce tarafından çevrilen ilk sansürsüz çevirinin katkısıyla, Dorian Gray'in Portesi isimli romanın İngilizce (kaynak) metne doğrudan uygulanan sansürden kaynaklanan farklılıkların 1938'de Türkçe'ye ilk çevrilen sansürlü metne ve 2014'te çevrilen ilk sansürsüz metin çevirilerine olan etkisinin örneklerle analiz edilmesi ve tartışılmasıdır. Bu sansürlü ve sansürsüz metinlerin arasındaki farklar orijinal metne yapılan değişikliklerle paralel olarak incelenmiş, anlamsal ve bütünsel farklılıklar 120 yıl öncesinin ve günümüzün sosyokültürel öğeleri altında tartışılmıştır.

Censorship is a phenomenon that can be encountered in different forms, places and times, starting with the language to today's world. This frequently used method mostly in politics can be applied in translations as a preference of the translators or as a necessity that can be shaped by the requirements of a specific time. The effects of the censorship applied to the original also known as the source text both before and after its publication, especially because of the connection with homosexuality on social, cultural and religious aspects, had not been known until the uncensored version of the book was published 120 years later. The change of the traditional perspective, the increase on sexual awareness to a large extent all over the world with the contribution of the studies done in the fields of sexual identities and social responsibilities helped the publication of the novel, the uncensored The Picture of Dorian Gray, with the author's first emotions, expressions and messages he wanted to convey to his readers as they were in the first place. The argument defended in this thesis is that, with the contribution of the first uncensored translation first translated by Ülker İnce in 2014, the analize with the examples and discussions on the differences arising from the censorship applied directly to the English (source) text of the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and the consequences of the censorship on the earliest censored translation in 1938 and the first uncensored Turkish translation in 2014. The differences between the censored and the uncensored texts were examined in parallel with the changes made in the original text, the semantic and holistic differences were discussed under sociocultural elements of both today and 120 years ago.
