World Design Organization, of which we are an institutional member, defines industrial design in a nutshell as “a trans-disciplinary profession that harnesses creativity to resolve problems and co-create solutions with the intent of making a product, system, service, experience or a business, better.” Industrial designers place people at the heart of the process. They perceive user needs in depth through empathy and apply a pragmatic, user-centered problem solving process to design products, systems, services and experiences. They are the strategic shareholders of the innovation process and are in a unique position to bridge the gap between various professional disciplines and commercial interests. They value the economic, social and environmental effects of their work, as well as its contributions in the creation of a better quality of life. Founded in 2009, our department offers mandatory professional courses, technical courses and professional elective courses to prepare our students to become well-equipped and competitive in their business life.

The Atılım University School of Architecture was founded in 2009. As for the number of students, our School is a medium-sized one, as is the case with many others in Europe. As a profession the expectation for which is to deal with people, society and environment in many aspects, architecture requires a similarly sophisticated education. In the Undergraduate Program at the Department of Architecture, we are working to establish such sophistication within the balance of theory and practice. Following the Integrated Doctorate Program that opened in 2010 for undergraduate and graduate alumni, the Thesis and Project Programs at Graduate Levels were opened in 2018. The self-evaluation studies of the Department that are run in coordination with the intra-evaluation and strategy studies of Atılım University are performed in relation to the external evaluations by the Architectural Accrediting Board (MİAK). The Department of Architecture is a member of the “European Association for Architectural Education” (EAAE).

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Türkiye'deki mevcut konteyner geçici afet konutlarının ortopedik engelli bireylerin erişilebilirliği açısından analiz edilmesi ve elde edilen veriler ışığında iyileştirme önerileri oluşturulması hedeflenmektedir. Bu doğrultuda AFAD'ın kullanmakta olduğu, engelliler için geçici afet konutlarının tasarımının Engelliler İçin Evrensel Standartlar Kılavuzu'na uyumluluğu, mevcut geçici konutun engelli bireylerin erişebilirliği açısından ihtiyaçlarını karşılama durumu ve ortopedik engellilik durumlarının bu ihtiyaçlara etkileri araştırılmıştır. Araştırma, ortopedik engelli bireylerin sanal ortamda oluşturulan geçici afet konutu mekânını deneyimlemesi ile gerçekleştirilmiş ve elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda geçici afet konut tasarımlarına iyileştirme önerileri oluşturulmuştur. Oluşturulan öneriler ile Engelliler için Evrensel Standartlar Kılavuzu'nda bulunan 245 kriter baz alınarak, mevcut durumda bulunan uyumlu kriter sayısı 67'den 142'ye çıkarılarak %208'lik bir iyileşme sağlanmıştır. İyileştirme önerileri, sonuç istatistikleri ile AFAD'a sunularak, görüş ve önerileri alınmıştır.
In this study, it is aimed to analyze the existing container temporary disaster housing in Turkey in terms of the accessibility of individuals with orthopedic disabilities and to establish a recommendation for improvement in the light of the obtained data. In this respect, the compatibility of the current temporary housing of AFAD with the Universal Standard Guidelines for Disabled, the status of meeting the needs of disabled people in terms of accessibility in the temporary disaster housing and the effects of orthopedic disability situations on these needs have been investigated. The research was carried out by experiencing the temporary disaster housing space created in virtual environment with orthopedic disabled individuals and recommendations for the improvement was established in the light of the obtained data. With the created recommendations, based on the 245 criteria in the Universal Standard Guidelines for Disabled, the number of compatible criteria in the current situation has been increased from 67 to 142, resulting in an improvement of 208%. The improvement recommendations were presented to AFAD with the result statistics and their opinions and recommendations were obtained.
