Abstract

This study is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted to determine the postpartum depression levels of mothers of infants with cleft lip and palate. The study included 150 mothers with infants with cleft lip and palate who were monitored at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Outpatient Clinic and who met the inclusion criteria. The data were collected by interviewing the mothers between January 2 and April 1, 2023, using the Socio-demographic Data Form and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Of 35.33% (n=53), participants scored 12 and above on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Among the potential risk factors, it was discovered that mother smoking status, time of learning the baby's diagnosis, having gone through a traumatic or upsetting experience while pregnant, the baby's gender, and low economic status were statistically significant. Considering that babies with cleft lip and palate are exposed to complex medical and surgical interventions, it is thought that the mothers of these babies experience more stress, fear, anxiety, and depression. For this reason, mothers with babies with cleft lip and palate should be well observed by nurses in the postpartum period and evaluated for depression. Mothers experiencing postpartum depression should be referred to the necessary units.
