Abstract

Breastfeeding plays an important role in the rapid establishment of the bond between the mother and the baby during the postpartum period. The perception of maternal self-efficacy in initiating and continuing breastfeeding has an impact. Breastfeeding self-efficacy, influenced by Bandura's self-efficacy theory, is affected by mothers' breastfeeding motivation and their confidence in themselves. This study aims to examine the relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy, breastfeeding motivation, and self-esteem. The descriptive and comparative study was conducted with 260 postpartum mothers determined through power analysis at Gazi University Hospital between November 20, 2022, and March 1, 2023. The data collection tools included a Socio-demographic Form, Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale, Breastfeeding Motivation Scale, and Self-Esteem Scale. The research findings indicated a significant positive relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding motivation (p<0.05), as well as between breastfeeding self-efficacy and self-esteem (p<0.05). When providing prenatal breastfeeding education to mothers, programs supporting their psychological well-being should be included. Nurses should ensure that educational programs and practices involve family members to provide support for mothers in terms of family and spousal support. Keywords: Breastfeeding self-efficacy, breastfeeding motivation, self-esteem, berastfeeding, nursing
