Charlotte Brontë'nin Villette ve Jane Eyre Romanlarında Yansıtılan Kadın Sorunsalı

Abstract

19.yüzyıl İngiltere'sinde kadınların sosyal durumu, bu dönem içinde,özellikle kadın romancılar tarafından yazılan romanlarda yansıtılmıştır. Bu romanlarda yansıtıldığı üzere, 19.Yüzyıl İngiltere'sinde kadınlara bağımsız yaşayabilmelerini sağlayacak eğitim ve öğretim olanakları sağlanamadığı gibi, kadınlar, aynı zamanda da çok sayıda kısıtlamalara maruz bırakılmışlardır. 19. Yüzyılda bu sebeplerden, kadın olmanın çok zor, acı veren ve ezici bir konum olduğunu, kadın yazarlar eserlerinde vurgulamışlardır. 19.yüzyılda kadınlar için sosyal yaşama katılabilme, daha iyi sosyal koşullarda yaşayabilme fırsatı evlilikten geçmekteydi. Ancak evlenebilmek için de kadınlar ya paralı ya güzel, çoğunlukla da her iki özelliğe sahip olmak zorundaydılar; bu iki özelliğe sahip olmayan kadınların ise iyi bir evlilik şansları yoktu. Giriş bölümünde, Viktorya dönemi kadının sosyal ve siyasal yaşamı ıle ilgili bilgiler verilirken, gelişme bölümlerinde, belirtilen romanlarda, ayrıntılı olarak 19. yüzyılda kadın sorunları ele alınmaktadır. Bu tez, 19. Yüzyılda, kadınların evlilik dışında seçeneklerinin çok az olduğunu, herşeyden önce kadınlara açık meslekler olmadığını, uygun tek mesleğin, özellikle orta sınıf parasız ve çekiciliği olmayan kadın için, mürebbiyelik olduğunu, mürebbiyelik ve evlilik dışında, topluma katılmada, ve kendilerini birey olarak kanıtlamada başka hiçbir olanakları olmadığını, böylelikle kadınlar her iki durumda da dışlanılıp ezildiklerinden, hiç bir zaman gerçek anlamda mutlu olamadıkları sonucuna ulaşılmaktadır.

The social position of women in the 19th century England is reflected in the novels of the period especially in the work of the female novelists. These novels, composed by female authors, illustrate quite clearly that while women were denied the educational and socio-psychological opportunities that would have enabled them to stand on their own feet, they were at the same time subject to a large variety of social restrictions. It can clearly be understood from these novels that being a woman was very difficult, distressing and oppressive during the 19th century. In the 19th century, for many women the only chance to improve their position was through marriage. Unfortunately, however, in order to attract a suitable partner, a woman had to be either rich or beautiful and often both. Women without these qualities did not have the chance to a good marriage, and even those who met these requirements found their lives unfulfilling due to the restrictions of married life and their lack of education. The circumstances in which women found themselves in the Victorian Age were demonstrated by Charlotte Brontë through the heroines of Jane Eyre and Villette. The thesis consists of an introductory chapter, two main chapters and a concluding chapter. In the introductory chapter, social and legal background of Victorian women is given. In the main chapters, the above named novels are analysed in detail from the perspective of the condition of woman question in the 19th century. The conclusion drawn from this study is that in the 19th century, very few choices were open to women outside marriage. They did not have many job opportunities, the only occupation which was considered to be appropriate for middle class women lacking in wealth and beauty was the position of the governess. Apart from getting married and being a governess, women did not have any other chances to assert themselves as entities. Accordingly, in both situations, since women were in a lower status than men, they could not prevent themselves from being subject to a number of discriminations, and very few of them could really be happy.
