The Atılım University Department of Civil Engineering was founded in 2000 as a pioneer for the Departments of Civil Engineering among the foundation schools of Ankara. It offers education in English. The Department of Civil Engineering has an academic staff qualified in all areas of the education offered. In addition to a high level of academic learning that benefits from learning opportunities through practice at its seven laboratories, the Department also offers a Cooperative Education program conducted in cooperation with renowned organizations in the construction sector. Accredited by MÜDEK (Association of Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs) (in 2018), our Department has been granted the longest period of accreditation to ever achieve through the association (six years). The accreditation is recognized by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education), and other international accreditation boards.

Abstract

Due to its topographical structure and geological features, Turkey frequently faces natural disasters. Since 1940, nine different seismic codes have brought into force in Turkey, which is a country of high seismicity since it is surrounded by active fault lines. As a result of major earthquakes, improvements in engineering and construction materials, ―Specification for Buildings to be Built in Seismic Zones‖ came into force in 2007, and has been implemented since then. In this thesis, ―Irregular Buildings‖ explained under Article 2.3 in the Technical Specification of 2007 will be analyzed in detail and the specification will be compared and contrasted with the technical specifications in New Zealand, in the United States of America, and Europe, where earthquakes are a part of daily life. In order to compare and contrast the specifications, several buildings with two layouts will be analyzed and designed using commercially available software packages, PROBINA and ETABS. Current limitations and regulations in Turkish Earthquake Code 2007 will be investigated and compared, based on the results of these case studies with respect to the similar earthquake codes in New Zealand, the US and Europe.
