Abstract

During this study, in which Turkey?s expectations from the Central Asian states, which gained their independence after the fall of Soviet Union in 1991, are examined via case study method, answers to the questions of ?What were the expectations of Turkey from the Central Asian states, which gained their independence after the fall of Soviet Union?, why did these expectations form?, in what degree these expectations were fulfilled?? are searched. It is concluded that historical ties along with ideologies such as ?pan-Turkism? and ?pan-Islamism? nourished the expectations of Turkey from the Central Asian states, while on the other hand Soviet legacy at the Central Asian states, Central Asian states? security needs stemming from radical terrorism and the interests of the external powers to the region seriously restricted Turkish expectations. Key Words 1. Central Asia 2. Pan-Turkism 3. Pan-Islamism 4. Ideology 5. Soviet legacy 6. Radical terrorism
