Abstract

The Center-Left has been one of the main political movements in Turkey's politics. Although the Center-Left Movements have been in political life for a long time, except from a few terms, it is seen that they could not come to the power. Therefore, this study examines the question of why they could not come to the power despite their long history in Turkish politics as its main problem and aims to answer this question according to the center-periphery theory by means of literature review and empirical studies. In this context, the study firstly constitutes a theoretical and historical background in order to answer the main question by handling the concept of ideology, the main ideologies that effect political life, the ideology of social democracy as the pinpoint of the Center-Left Movements, the historical and theoretical roots of social democracy, andthe Center-Left Movements in the world and their success, and subsequently it tries to determine which reasons and factors have an effect on the success and failure of the Center-Left Movements in Turkey since their emergence in the political life. From this perspective, it is concluded that the reasons why they could not come to the power are the problems of leadership and ideology, their position with regard to religion and secularism, their failure to affiliate with the people and to get out of the control the Kemalist Center
