Abstract
Attitudes and beliefs towards abortion, and the behaviors women encounter as a result of undergoing the procedure, impact women's health. In this study, it was aimed to determine the stigmatizing attitudes, beliefs and behaviors towards abortion among university students from the nursing and midwifery department. The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 358 nursing and midwifery students in Kastamonu University between 07.03.2023 and 03.04.2023. Data collection tools were Personal Information Form and The Stigmatizing Attitudes, Beliefs and Behaviors towards Abortion Scale. In our study, the mean scale score reflecting students' stigmatizing attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors toward abortion was 74.54±10.64 points. In the analysis of the study findings, it was determined that the total Stigmatizing Attitudes, Beliefs and Behaviors towards Abortion Scale scores and subscale scores of the students were affected by their department, age, gender, marital status, family structure, home resident, longest place of residence and sexual health training (p<0.05). According to these results, it is recommended that the content of undergraduate study of midwives and nurses who are responsible for women's care during abortion be updated in a way that it stresses matters such as importance of safe abortion, effects of abortion stigma on women's health, roles and responsibilities of midwives and nurses during abortion.
