Determination of Scattering Center of Multipath Signals Using Geometric Optics and Fresnel Zone Concepts
(Elsevier - Division Reed Elsevier india Pvt Ltd, 2014) Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Kara, Ali; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 01. Atılım University
In this study, a method for determining scattering center (or center of scattering points) of a multipath is proposed, provided that the direction of arrival of the multipath is known by the receiver. The method is based on classical electromagnetic wave principles in order to determine scattering center over irregular terrain. Geometrical optics (GO) along with Fresnel zone concept is employed, as the receiver, the transmitter positions and irregular terrain data are assumed to be provided. The proposed method could be used at UHF bands, especially, operations of radars and electronic warfare applications. Copyright (C) 2014, Karabuk University. Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V. Geometrik Optik ve Fresnel Bölgesi Kavramları Kullanarak Çoklu Yansımalı Sinyallerin Saçılma Merkezinin Hesaplanması
(2013) Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Kara, Ali; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 01.

Heterogeneity in Classes: Cooperative Problem-Solving Activities Through Cooperative Learning
(Fac Teacher Education, 2014) Cigdemoglu, Ceyhan; Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Kara, Ali; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; Public Relations and Advertising; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 05. School of Business; 01. Atılım University
Teachers, from primary schools to college, experience challenges regarding both increased class sizes and a greater diversity of students having a broad spectrum of abilities, interests, needs, and goals. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of cooperative learning through Cooperative Problem-Solving (CPS) activities on homogenous and heterogeneous grouping in an engineering course. As a mixed method design, the study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data. The participants, 47 engineering students selected conveniently, were enrolled in a communication systems course. The analysis of the quantitative data indicated that no significant difference (p=.791) exists between the ways in which the students in homogenous and the students in heterogeneous group understand communication systems. In order to reveal the perceptions of students regarding the implementation, they were interviewed at the end of the semester. The qualitative data obtained from these interviews suggests that students prefer heterogeneous to homogenous grouping. The findings also imply that further research should concentrate on heterogeneous grouping strategies and more detailed qualitative data in order to reveal what kind of patterns emerge from students' interactions in different groupings.

(Ieee, 2014) Dagdeviren, Birkan; Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Kara, Ali; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 01. Atılım University
In this work, simulations and preliminary measurement results of an S-band FMCW radar is presented. A commercial simulation tool (AWR-VSS) has been used at system level design stage of the radar. The simulation tool provides all functions regarding with transmitter, target and receiving blocks, and it finally feeds echo signals to the digital processing block implemented in MATLAB. The target range and velocity have been derived for simple target scenario in MATLAB. Then, a modular RF front end of the radar has been designed using commercial of the shelf (COTS) components. The radar system has been proved to be working in indoor environment using measurement equipment. Moreover, design of horn antennas for transmitting and reception blocks have been demonstrated Real time signal processing functions will be developed at the next stage.

Neural Network Based Estimation of Resonant Frequency of an Equilateral Triangular Microstrip Patch Antenna
(Univ Osijek, Tech Fac, 2013) Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Tora, Hakan; Can, Sultan; Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 13. School of Civil Aviation (4-Year); 01. Atılım University
This study proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) model in order to approximate the resonant frequencies of equilateral triangular patch antennas. The neural network structure applied here is trained and tested for both single-layer and double-layer antennas. It is shown upon experiment that the resonant frequencies obtained from the neural network are both more accurate than the calculated frequencies by formula and satisfactorily close to the measured frequencies. Results appear to be promising as per the available literature. This paper also may offer more efficient approach to developing antennas of such nature. While the total absolute error of 7 MHz and the average error of 0,09 % are achieved for single-layer antenna, the total absolute and average errors are 49 MHz and 0,07 % for the double-layered antenna, respectively.

Neural Network Based Resonant Frequency Solver for Rectangular-Shaped Shorting Pin-Loaded Antennas
(Wiley, 2013) Can, Sultan; Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Aydin, Elif; Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering; 15. Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences; 01. Atılım University
This study presents an artificial neural network (ANN) estimation of the operating frequencies of shorting pin-loaded rectangular microstrip patch antennas. A feed forward back propagation multilayer perceptron neural network structure is applied in the study. The results are compared with the ones in the literature and the FEM based simulation results. The results of the operating frequencies obtained by using this method are in very good agreement with the experimental results presented in the literature. Several antennas are also simulated by a finite element method based solver and these results are also compared with the results of the proposed neural network model. The average error of the lower frequency obtained by this study has a decrement of 2.025% when compared to the FEM based simulation software and for the upper frequency this difference is 6.835%. The effects of permittivity of the antenna, size of the dimensions of the rectangular patch, and the shorting pin position are also evaluated. In the light of the ANN model and the relations obtained two antennas in the same shape are produced and the results of these antennas are presented as well. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
