    A Multi-Agent System Model for Partner Selection Process in Virtual Enterprise

    Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a collaboration model between multiple business partners in a value chain. VE information system deals with highly dynamic information from heterogeneous data sources. In order to manage and store dynamic VE information in the database, an ontology based VE model has been developed. To select winner enterprises in VE, a Multi Agent System (MAS) has been developed. Communication and data transition among agents and system entities are based on defined rules in VE ontology model. One of the most important contributions of agents in VE system is in partner selection step of VE formation phase. In this step several agents with different goals and strategies are collaborating and competing each other to win the negotiation procedure or maximize the profit for their assigned enterprise. Different strategies are developed for the agents depending on their appetite for winning the auction against maximizing the profit. Several simulations were run and the results are stored. These results are fed into a neural network in order to predict which enterprise will win the auction and what will be the profit margin. The motivation is to provide a forecasting agent for the customers about the outcomes of the auctions so that they can plan ahead and take the necessary action. Early results indicate such simulated multi-agent VE formations can be used in real systems.     Effect of Hardening Models on Different Ductile Fracture Criteria in Sheet Metal Forming

    Prediction of the fracture is one of the challenging issues which gains attention in sheet metal forming as numerical analyses are being extensively used to simulate the process. To have better results in predicting the sheet metal fracture, appropriate ductile fracture criterion (DFC), yield criterion and hardening rule should be chosen. In this study, the effects of different hardening models namely isotropic, kinematic and combined hardening rules on the various uncoupled ductile fracture criteria are investigated using experimental and numerical methods. Five different ductile fracture criteria are implemented to a finite element code by the user subroutines. The criterion constants of DFCs are obtained by the related experimental tests. The in-plane principle strains obtained by the finite element analyses for different DFCs are compared with the experimental results. Also, the experimental results are used to evaluate the principle strain values calculated by the finite element analysis for different combinations of DFCs and hardening rules. It is shown that some DFCs give better predictions if the appropriate hardening model is employed.

    Evaluation of Efficiencies of Diffuse Allochthonous and Autochthonous Nutrient Input Control in Restoration of a Highly Eutrophic Lake

    Mogan Lake is an important recreational area for Metropolitan Ankara-Turkey. It is a shallow eutrophic lake with a dense growth of macrophytes. The main contributors of nutrients and other pollutants to the lake are the creeks carrying the runoff water from the watershed and upland farming land, in addition to the domestic and industrial wastewater discharges from a nearby town and industries. Hydrodynamic and water quality modeling techniques were used to determine the optimum management schemes for the lake restoration and diffuse pollution control. Management scenarios were devised and tested to control allochthonous and autochthonous nutrient inputs to the lake. Phosphorus and nitrogen load reductions were the main test elements for the control of allochthonous nutrient inputs. The scenario analysis revealed that reduction of phosphorus and nitrogen loads from diffused sources will have a marginal effect on controlling eutrophication if macrophyte growth is left uncontrolled. Scenarios employing macrophyte harvesting and sediment dredging have been evaluated for autochthonous nutrient input control. Sediment dredging alone has been shown to yield the most favorable conditions for water quality improvement in Mogan Lake. Further, control of diffuse pollution was an essential final step to achieve an acceptable long-term sustainable water quality improvement in the lake.

    An Industry Sponsored Undergraduate Research (ur) Experience: Preliminary Study on Fulfillment of Program Outcomes and Industry Requirements

    This study presents educational results of an industry sponsored undergraduate research (UR) project. The aim of the study is to show how such project works contribute to students in acquiring qualifications or skills necessary by the industry, and abilities regarding with program outcomes of accreditation organisations. The study is based on quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (self descriptions) data collected from senior students who worked in 9 months UR project sponsored by a company in Radio frequency (RF) and Communications domain. The preliminary results showed that an industry sponsored undergraduate research project may serve to both short term (industry requirements) and longer term (program outcomes) expectations in undergraduate curriculum of engineering departments.

    Assessment of Nitrogen Excess in an Agricultural Area Using a Nitrogen Balance Approach

    A pilot study has been initiated to develop an approach for quantification of nitrogen excesses from agricultural activities that involve greenhouse farming in Kumluca Plain, Turkey. Detailed calculations utilizing the nitrogen balance method (NBM) were carried out at nine different locations within the plain over a time period of one year. The major contributing factors and governing operative mechanisms taken into consideration were nitrogen application rates both as organic and chemical fertilizers, irrigation water to application practices, and nitrogen uptake by plants. The adopted approach yielded valuable information such as plant nitrogen uptake efficiencies, excess nitrogen, leaching rates and leachate nitrogen concentrations. Further, a site specific multiple linear regression model has been developed to estimate the ratio (N-leachate/N-groundwater) as a function of independent variables: farming age, excess nitrogen application and SEEPAGE Index Number. The negative sign of the model parameters implies that the ratio (N-leachate/N-groundwater) decreases as values of the independent variables increase. The adopted approach and the obtained results can beneficially be applied to similar sites to establish basic parameters of irrigation and fertilizer application operations.

    An Experimental Study on Surface Quality of Al6061-T6 in Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Milling with Minimum Quantity Lubrication

    Al6061-T6 is frequently used in the automotive and aerospace industries, where milling is an essential process, due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. In order to achieve improved surface quality in milling, Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Milling (UVAM) has been introduced recently. Besides, Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) is another advanced method to enhance the surface properties of the cutting by improving the coolant performance. However, the effects of simultaneous implementation of UVAM and MQL methods has not yet been studied sufficiently. This paper investigates the effects of applying UVAM in tandem with MQL in cutting of Al6061-T6. The results showed that surface quality enhanced with this combination. (c) 2022 The Authors.
