An Application of High-Power Electromagnetic Pulse: Forming of Sheet Metal Using Electromagnetic Waves
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2016) Inanan,G.; Baranoglu,B.; Aydin,E.
In this study, the application of high velocity metal forming process by means of electromagnetic field is proposed. Electromagnetic Sheet Metal Forming (ESMF) is a process of forming sheet metal with very high speed (in milliseconds) without mechanical contact using the energy density of a pulsed magnetic field. In this process, deformation of the workpiece is driven by a transient electric current that is induced in a coil using a capacitor bank and discharge switch. This study presents some experiments and their results by examining the effects of different parameters in the proposed ESMF setup. The analysis and modelling of Electromagnetic sheet metal forming (ESMF) process is presented, as well. It has been seen that, it is possible to design a new system using the outcomes of this study. © 2015 Chamber of Electrical Engineers of Turkey.

Personality Type Indicator Models in Serious Games: a Case Study in a Surgical Navigation Game
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015) Menekse,G.G.; Cagiltay,N.E.; Ozcelik,E.
Serious games are a popular concept in both the research and commercial areas. It is agreed that the concept refers to the use of computer games without the main purpose of pure entertainment. In addition to being entertaining, they have some additional educational or training objectives as well. Serious games are used in different areas such as military, government, educational, corporate, and healthcare. However, according to their individual differences, it is not always possible to provide such an educational environment that fits expectations and preferences of all audience. Hence, personalization is becoming an essential issue in serious game environments, which focus on a human-centered paradigm aiming to provide adaptive and personalized services to the users according to the context. However, how such a personalization should be affectively implemented in the design of serious games is a challenge. This study aims to better understand the affect of personality types on game play. For this purpose, a game-based simulation environment which also records all details of the player during the performance of several tasks in the game play was used. Twenty nine students were asked to play the simulation game. Additionally, their personality types were collected based on the theory of psychological types by Carl Jung, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which measures personality preferences as defined by Four Dichotomous pairs of mental functions or attitudes. The correlation between these personality types and individual performance measures of players during the game play was analyzed. However no significant correlation between game parameters and the players' personality types has been recorded. This may be because of the limited number of participants that need to be examined in the future studies. © 2015 IEEE.

An Approach for Improving Performance of Sensorless Field Control
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Bulent Ertan,H.; Filci,T.; Ertan, H. Bulent
Sensorless vector control is preferred in some applications, because there is no need for speed or position sensor. However, by their very nature, they are susceptible to making position error in rotor position estimation. As a consequence the performance of motor drives employing this technology is lower than those which employ sensors. This paper presents a new approach which identifies and uses rotor slot harmonic current component in the stator current to identify rotor position. The time taken by the algorithm used is short enough to be embedded within the vector control algorithm. The essence of the algorithm is treating the current component due to rotor slot harmonics as an amplitude modulated signal on the fundamental current component. The magnitude of this current component is identified via demodulation. Using this information rotor position and speed can be determined. This approach is tested on a commercial induction motor and some results are presented which illustrate that rotor position can be successfully determined. © 2018 IEEE.

Sustainable Business Model Innovation: a Quantitative Analysis of Relevant Factors
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023) Salimnezhad,A.; Dastgoshade,S.
To integrate sustainability targets into a company's business model, one potential mechanism is sustainable business model innovation (SBMI). It defines how new business models are developed to change organizations' existing business model targets for sustainable development. Despite SBMI's great potential to address industries' long-standing sustainability challenges, it is not fully adopted in practice. This study through a DEMATEL technique strives to outline the possible actions that need to be taken before implementing SBMI to enhance the success rate. The current study investigates the most significant and necessary actions through strategic, institutional, and operational segments. Results suggest that action programs at organizations' strategic- and institutional levels are more critical to have a successful SBMI implementation. Moreover, our results indicate that innovation or more clearly how innovation is practiced within an organization is key to fully unlocking the SBMI's potential. © 2023 IEEE.

A Discussion on Is and Software Measurement Terminology Flexibility as an Example
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2010) Pusatli,O.T.; Misra,S.
Closeness in meaning of the terms in the information systems and software engineering May result in discussion of using proper affiliated terms while covering the scope of research. An example is touched in this exploratory study, which discusses flexibility and its affiliated terms: changeability, adaptability, compatibility, flexibility, expandability, extendibility, extensibility and portability. A risk of misinterpretation due to the variety of the usage of the term is noted whereas the adoption of the term has shown that the literature does not have such examples to a serious level; but this review informs about missing discussions in the research reports in the literature due to omitting or ignoring affiliated terms of the keywords. Another product of this paper is to provide basis for future studies in the flexibility as a quality factor in the software measurement. © 2010 IEEE.

Convolution Neural Network (cnn) Based Automatic Sorting of Cherries
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021) Park,H.; Khan,M.U.
Cherries are spring fruits enriched with nutrients, and are easily available in food markets around the world. Due to their excess demand, many enterprises solely focused on their processing. Cherries are especially susceptible to pathological-, physiological-diseases and structural degradation due to their soft outer skin. The post-harvest life of the fruit is limited by various characteristics. The agricultural industry has also been at the forefront to get benefits from the advanced machine learning tools. This study presents an image processing-based system for sorting cherries using the convolutional neural network (CNN). For this study, Prunus avium L cherries of export quality, available in Turkey, tagged as ‘0900 Ziraat’, are used. Surprisingly, there exists no dataset for these cherries; hence, we developed our dataset. Through the proposed approach based upon U-Net, the binary classification accuracy of 99% is achieved. Clear identification is demonstrated by the test results of varying mixture ratios of good and bad cherries. It can therefore be said that for cherry sorting and grading, U-Net can be applied as a reliable and promising machine learning tool. ©2021 IEEE

Comparative Analysis Of Patch Antennas With Rectangular Slots For Laminate And Wearable Materials At 5g Networks
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2024) Hakanoglu, B.G.; Agaya, E.; Gulmez, G.; Yalinsu, S.
In this study, new multi-band patch antenna design models are proposed for use in 5G networks. The purpose of the designs is to open rectangular slots on rectangular shaped patch antennas and bring them to the desired operating conditions with parametric analyzes. The designs were carried out by following the same procedure steps using five different dielectric laminate substrate materials, such as RO3003, RT6006, FR4, RO3203, RO6010, and one denim fabric base material. The antennas were compared in terms of return loss, gain and radiation characteristics. Except for the antenna designed with RO3203 at certain values of rectangular slots, radiation at multiple frequencies was obtained at 5G frequencies. With the proposed method, improvement was observed for return loss and bandwidth characteristics in the RO3203 based antenna. This study will be a resource for antenna researchers by revealing the responses of different substrate materials to the same design method for 5G bands in patch antennas. © 2024 IEEE.
