    An Overview of Challenges To Long-Term Sustainability and Scalability of Radio Frequency Fingerprinting

    Internet of Things (IoT) technology has become ubiquitous with a broad spectrum of applications. This vast penetration entails formidable cyber-security for the stable operation of the associated systems. Most inexpensive IoT devices employ rudimentary cryptographic security mechanisms due to their resource-limited architecture. Radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) is a physical layer security mechanism that leverages hardware impairments for authentication and device classification. To this end, its scope has been limited to academia owing to daunting challenges. In this work, an abridged overview of the state-of-the-art is provided, along with a summary of the challenges that hinder progress toward practical applications. The article culminates with a discussion on the intricacies of performance metrics in RFF and the direction for future research.

    An Undergraduate Curriculum for Deep Learning

    Deep Learning (DL) is an interesting and rapidly developing field of research which has been currently utilized as a part of industry and in many disciplines to address a wide range of problems, from image classification, computer vision, video games, bioinformatics, and handwriting recognition to machine translation. The starting point of this study is the recognition of a big gap between the sector need of specialists in DL technology and the lack of sufficient education provided by the universities. Higher education institutions are the best environment to provide this expertise to the students. However, currently most universities do not provide specifically designed DL courses to their students. Thus, the main objective of this study is to design a novel curriculum including two courses to facilitate teaching and learning of DL topic. The proposed curriculum will enable students to solve real-world problems by applying DL approaches and gain necessary background to adapt their knowledge to more advanced, industry-specific fields.

    THE USE OF CUMULANTS FOR VOICED-UNVOICED SEGMENTS IDENTIFICATION IN SPEECH SIGNALS

    In this study, voiced-unvoiced classification performance of Turkish sounds using skewness and kurtosis is examined. The analyses show that higher order cumulants can be employed as a feature in voiced-unvoiced classification that is vital in speech processing applications. Furthermore, it has been shown that cumulants are also useful for identifying voiced and unvoiced segments in noisy speech signals.

    HOW TO WRITE POETICALLY

    The importance of the role of writing in second language acquisition is indisputable. Compared to other skills, such as reading, listening and speaking, writing has a unique place, for it is a creative and productive stage of second language learning. It has been observed that almost every student has difficulty in writing. Students struggle to write even a solitary sentence let alone a well organized, coherent and accurate essay, which is a prerequisite for English Preparatory School students and for freshman students of English Language and Literature departments. The aim of this paper is to show how supposedly "boring" writing courses can be made attractive, enjoyable and at the same time productive to students. To this end, we provide our students with an atmosphere wherein creativity, enjoyment and above all, learning can take place. Our chosen medium in the construction of such a learning environment is poetry. The paper consists of two sections: the first is the theory section, which is about the function of literature. This section also includes a number of poetry definitions and the advantages of using poetry in writing courses. The second section focuses on practical activities to demonstrate how poetry can be applied to improve students' writing skills. The second section proceeds in three subsections entitled "pre-writing", "writing" and "post-writing". The overall aim of these activities is to integrate the two receptive language skills, reading and listening, and the two productive skills, writing and speaking. In conclusion, this paper is an attempt to turn a negatively perceived writing class into a student-friendly activity.

    Securing the Internet of Things: Challenges and Complementary Overview of Machine Learning-Based Intrusion Detection

    The significant increase in the number of IoT devices has also brought with it various security concerns. The ability of these devices to collect a lot of data, including personal information, is one of the important reasons for these concerns. The integration of machine learning into systems that can detect security vulnerabilities has been presented as an effective solution in the face of these concerns. In this review, it is aimed to examine the machine learning algorithms used in the current studies in the literature for IoT network security. Based on the authors' previous research in physical layer security, this research also aims to investigate the intersecting lines between upper layers of security and physical layer security. To achieve this, the current state of the area is presented. Then, relevant studies are examined to identify the key challenges and research directions as an initial overview within the authors' ongoing project. © 2024 IEEE.

    An Agent-based Trading Infrastructure for Combinatorial Reverse Auctions

    A Combinatorial Reverse Auction Trading Infrastructure - CRATI is designed and implemented as an agent-based system. Two basic building blocks Java Agent Development Framework (JADE) and an Open Source Java Constraint Programming Library (Choco Solver) are used to facilitate agent interactions and an optimization task. For our purpose, it is shown that auction Winner Determination Problem (WDP) can suitably be represented as a weighted set covering problem instance whose solution gives the decided winners of the auction process. In order to realize the system, a variation of Contract Net protocol is designed and implemented to handle auctions that occur in the platform from start to finish.

    Development of a low cost radio controller for Tele operation systems: Crane controller design as an industry sponsored undergraduate research

    This study presents some of the design and development stages of a radio control system for dense interference environments. All design and development stages were conducted by undergraduate students, with an undergraduate research project sponsored by a local company. The study starts with an overview of the system including choice of main components and modules. Then, it discusses the design stages of the system from analog to digital conversion to driving circuit of the targeted mechanical system (crane), and provides some preliminary results and conclusions. One of the design criteria in the project was minimization of the cost and size, and the preliminary results have shown that the prototype could compete with many commercial equivalents.

    Using learning style theory in remote laboratory applications

    Studies have shown that, while learning different concepts, people sometimes use different approaches. These different approaches define individual learning styles. Understanding learning style differences is thus an important step in improving performance of the individuals and educational institutions. In this study, a learning style assessment tool was used to examine the relationship between students' learning styles and their performance in engineering education programs of Atilim University. 329 students (55 female) participated in this study. At their first year in the program, students' learning styles are measured by a learning style assessment tool developed by David Kolb. The results show that, at the Atilim University's engineering education program, most of the students are having assimilator type of learning style (45%). Convergers (27%) and divergers (22%) follow the assimilators. The number of accommodators is very limited (5%). This information can be used to create adaptive teaching environments in distance education courses.

    COMPARISON OF COMPUTER-BASED PROPAGATION MODELS WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA COLLECTED IN AN URBAN AREA AT 1800 MHz

    Nowadays a lot of models are set for the efficient and economic usage of frequency band since the band is a limited source. Therefore, the propagation models created for this purpose were studied in the literature. These models are Free Space Path Loss (Fspl) + Reflection plus Multiple Diffraction (RMD), COST-Hata and COST-WI models. In order to compare the success of the models, electric field strength measurements were taken in a chosen district (Mustafa Kemal Mahallesi Ankara, Turkey) where an irregular structure style can be observed. First set of measurements were recorded at random coordinates and second set of measurements were collected by the following coordinates tracking on a single line. As a conclusion, measured values were compared with the results which were taken from the mentioned models with graphical presentations. The most appropriate model was tried to be found and as another aim of the study, a correction factor was generated as a modification for COST-Hata propagation model.
