Abstract
In this thesis, we examine the dynamics of an SIRS (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible) epidemic model that includes a latent time delay in the transmission term and a saturated treatment function. The model aims to offer a better representation of infectious diseases characterized by limited treatment capacity and a time gap between infection and being infected. To begin with, it is shown that all solutions of the model are positive and bounded, which ensures that the model is well-defined from an epidemiological point of view. Then, the basic reproduction number, R0 , is computed, which is a very important threshold for understanding how diseases spread. The stability of the disease-free equilibrium is analyzed, demonstrating that it is locally asymptotically stable when R0 < 1 and unstable when R0 > 1. The main focus of the thesis is to look into the existence and stability of endemic equilibria. It is shown that the model can exhibit complex nonlinear behavior, including the phenomena of forward (transcritical) and backward bifurcations. The backward bifurcation is an important discovery. It means that even when R0 < 1, there can be a stable endemic equilibrium and a stable disease-free equilibrium at the same time. This phenomenon, resulting from the saturated treatment, indicates that reducing R0 below one may not be sufficient to eradicate the disease. Also, the backward bifurcation range is derived by establishing the critical threshold that will be a sub-threshold for controlling the disease. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the analytical results. These simulations demonstrate the model's behavior, such as forward and backward bifurcations. This provides a full understanding of how time delay and saturated treatment affect disease dynamics.
