The Mediating Role of Organizational Agility in the Effect of Artificial Intelligence Adoption and Artificial Intelligence Ambdexterity on Competitive Advantage in Organizations
The Mediating Role of Organizational Agility in the Effect of Artificial Intelligence Adoption and Artificial Intelligence Ambdexterity on Competitive Advantage in Organizations
Abstract
The primary aim of this thesis is to examine the relationships among artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, AI ambidexterity (routine and innovative use), organizational agility, and competitive advantage, while developing an original AI maturity model that captures both the technical depth and functional diffusion of AI usage within firms operating in Türkiye. The study population consists of professionals working in organizations that actively employ AI technologies. The study primarily focuses on the information technologies, finance/banking, and telecommunications sectors. Additionally, participants from other industries where artificial intelligence applications are increasingly prevalent, such as healthcare, aviation/automotive, energy, manufacturing, and education, are also included in the sample. Data were collected from 512 participants through an online survey using convenience sampling. The Turkish adaptation of the measurement scales followed a serial translation procedure; descriptive analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS, and the measurement and structural models were tested via PLS-SEM using SmartPLS software. The findings reveal that AI adoption has strong and significant effects on both routine and innovative AI use. However, its direct effect on competitive advantage is not significant. Organizational agility emerges as the strongest determinant of competitive advantage. AI adoption influences competitive advantage entirely through innovative use and organizational agility, demonstrating both full and sequential mediation mechanisms. Routine AI use does not significantly predict organizational agility or competitive advantage. These results indicate that innovative AI use—rather than purely operational, routine applications—is the primary mechanism through which firms translate AI investments into strategic value and competitive outcomes. This study contributes to organizational behavior and strategic management literature by demonstrating that AI adoption enhances competitive advantage not directly, but indirectly through usage patterns and agility capabilities. From a marketing perspective, the findings highlight that innovative AI use plays a critical role in enabling customer value creation, differentiation, and strategic positioning. Additionally, the study offers an original, practice-oriented AI maturity model tailored to the Turkish context, thereby providing a novel contribution to the AI literature. This model enables the assessment of firms' technical AI capabilities and functional diffusion levels, offering practical implications for both researchers and practitioners seeking to understand and strategically manage AI-driven transformation.
