Hafif asfalt betonunun mekanik performansı: Karıştırma ve polimer modifiye bağlayıcılar yaklaşımı
Abstract
This study examines the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete with lightweight aggregates (LWAs), namely pumice and perlite, in relation to traditional limestone. The study addresses the increasing need for sustainable pavements by assessing the viability of lightweight aggregates, readily accessible in Turkey, as partial or complete replacements for dense aggregates. Eleven mixtures were formulated utilizing the Marshall method with SBS-modified 50–70 asphalt binder (4.5% SBS) to improve adhesion and flexibility. Laboratory studies adhering to ASTM and AASHTO standards evaluated volumetric characteristics, Marshall stability and flow, indirect tensile strength (ITS), tensile strength ratio (TSR), index of retained strength (IRS), Cantabro loss, and resistance to low-temperature cracking. The findings indicated that mixtures containing 100% pumice or perlite exhibited elevated binder absorption, reduced stability, and increased fragility. Blended systems that incorporate limestone with pumice or perlite in an SBS-modified binder demonstrate enhanced performance, showcasing superior strength, moisture resistance, and durability, while also decreasing the weight of the combination. Among lightweight systems, perlite mixes exhibited a favorable equilibrium between weight reduction and satisfactory durability, whereas pumice boosted adhesion but compromised stability. The study verifies that hybrid lightweight-limestone combinations can produce sustainable asphalt concretes that satisfy mechanical performance standards, providing viable options for Turkey's infrastructure and informing future pavement design.
